Dan - The UPS I'm getting (actually it's sitting here in my office) will run my main pump for about an hour, or one powerhead for 3 hours. True, it won't work for long outages, but it's free and it will actually run all my pumps and powerheads for about 45 min.

I don't understand why you need to go out and fill up the small gas tank on the generator every 3 1/2 hours.

I would refuse!

They usually run on a gravity drain from the gas tank on the Genset itself.

Pretty simple to unhook the gas tank and run a line to a larger tank.

Anyone who has plumbed a sump should be able to do that. Make sure you put a valve in the line so you can disconnect it to transport it.

Parts should be able to be had at a power equipment place

They usually do?

I think I've seen this arrangement in boats, but not on a generator.

So I guess I would need a cap that would fit my generator and accept the line, the line, and a cap that fits on the additional tank?

I would have lost my 125g yesterday if it was not got the Generac 7000 I purchased a week and a half ago. Storms blew through tuesday night and I was w/o power for about 20 hrs...some in the area are not expected to have power returned until Fri.

As far as I am concerned the generator has alrady paid for itself in less than 2 weeks of ownership (and here I thought that just because I purchased I would never find a need for it).

No, I am talking take the tank off the generator. That may take a little finagalin. There should be a fitting on the bottom of that tank that the fuel runs through. That is the one you want to extend

Of course if you blow yourself up, don't blame me!

If you have an old lawnmower sitting around you should be able to see what I am talking about without taking it apart.

Have fun, and remember not to look in the tank with a match!

I dunno, my generator looks like a suitcase all enclosed in one plastic housing. May not be so easy....

I recently lost all my fish in my 180 display due to a GFI popping during the night, all the money I've spent on backup equipment didn't do a damn for me.....

I have a 400w inverter in my truck, plus a 6.5Kw generator in the garage.

Today I acquired a 1800w inverter and 2 deep cycle batteries, I'm going to re plumb my system so that there is redundancy in the main circulation with automatic automatic backup power...

yea, this happened to me in Jan as well...sucks! Generally there are folks around the house to address this if it is discovered but this is not always the case. Reminds me I need to see if I can use an old CO2 detector to cherp if electrifity fails....anyone else have better/cheaper solution?

In general, you should NOT place all of your pumps on the same circuit. I run external pumps ( two for redundancy ) and have each pump on a seperate, non-GCFI breaker. External pumps in particular can trip GCFIs very easily. GCFIs should only be used on things which are submerged or can fall into the water.
Very true that a backup generator will do nothing for your tank if the GCFI trips and you have all of your circulation pumps on that circuit.
