Hey all-

Before my question- I posted about buying a new house under construction, and having the ability to make some customizations while its going. The opportunity is here, looks like my offer will go through. so... yay for me.

So, I am going to build a out of the wall tank, along with a small room behind it for maint access. I will throw out my plans here for critique, as the house is going up NOW, and I need to make some quick decisions. Not the most optimal of situations with regard to study/research time, I know.

Mods/admins- would you like to see a set of threads started on a fully custom job, start to finish, lots of pics that could be archived later? There is alot of that here already, just curious. Say yes and I will contribute.

....

That aside, my real question- on electrics- I will be running 2 seperate fish only dedicated GFI circuits for the tank. What kind of breakers should I run? I was thinking 30 amps. I will wire them for batterey bypass up at the breaker box too, keep the battery backup system away from the tank. Should I have more circuits?

BTW the tank in mind is... approx 180gal with large sump, multiple fuges, maybe a plumbed in seperate small tank for "other species" IE dont play well with others... These will all be built into the wall, and there will be viewing windows for all of the tanks, yup, even the sump. I figured some cheap colored lighting could look really cool to backlight some of the eq... and removable panels for when I dont wanna see em... oh yeah, its gonna be a circus for sure. Closed loop, calcium reactor, skimmer, fuge, halides, wavemaker of some sort, all the goods.

Just planning the nice stuff while the walls are open and it is easy to do.

Thanks in advance for being involved, and helping me. This site is where I have learned 90% of what I know, and I am pretty good about reading up on this stuff too. Just alot out here. Well, enough kissing up, sorry for the lengthy post. When I am excited about a project, I tend to run on...

More later

Not sure on the breaker amperage, however, IMHO, the more outlets you can provide without using a "multiple" outlet-the boxes with a small extension cord and many outlets; the better off you are. Keep in mind that the GFCI's aren't 100% failsafe as far as protecting you- I would definetely recommend them for added safety, however, I would also not fully trust them.

krusty crab, im a residential electrican 17 years worth, your'e best bet would be to run three 20 amp 110 volt dedicated circuts to your'e fish room. if money isen't a huge issue i would install a 60 amp 220 volt 20 circut sub panel in the fish room and from there you can add circuts at will.

T-gallo nailed it. Id' just add that I would make the breakers GFI type. That way the entire circuit is protected and you can you el-cheapo outlets where you need them.

Yep. But I'd try to get the sub panel away from the fish room itself. It's gonna get humid in there, and over time, You could possibly have a problem.

If you're not going with the sub panel. get at least 3 if not 4, 20 amp circuits. Since you're putting in a large tank, you'll thank yourself later.

If it's a long run from your service to your fish room, You might want to think about running some extra lines now, even if you don't terminate them. Save them for The Additions!

Krusty. Yep, post pics of your progress. They will keep me drooling.
I think displaying the refugiums as well is a great idea. Not so sure about the sump. Think about a separate air conditioner for your fish room.

If the sockets are going to be out of sight, I would have them up off the floor a bit away from spillage, etc... Maybe waist high?

Just a suggestion.

Thanks guys-

Modo/Mogo good tip on the height of the outlets and the AC. I will be getting estimates back soon on all of the suggestions.

The sump display would have a detachable cover. I may throw some rock in the sump, bristleworm party, mantis fun house, what have you.

I will post plans/blueprints/ideas for losing my retirement/ later on this month. Thanks to all that inspire these ideas! And contribute!!

The sub panel is a great idea. If I were to do it again (I just had lines run for the tank), I would do 4 - 3 for the tank, and one for non tank stuff like fans, work lights, ac, etc.

I've been moving some wiring around this aft to make way for a surge tank. All the while thinking about a sub panel. Great idea. Here I go saving pennies again.
