Kinda hard to vote yes for this one. Some of the packages include 2 tangs.

Frankly, I don't understand the "outrage" here. IMO, there's nothing wrong with keeping a small Zebrasoma species tang in a 50 gallon reef aquarium or advertising it as part of a "cleanup package."

I took a look at the website. My only disagreement is over the Naso tangs, which I don't feel should be maintained in any aquarium less than 125 gallons and six-feet in length. Also, although Naso tangs will consume some species of macro-algae, they are omnivores by nature and not a good choice for the control of most nuisance algae.

Im very surprised that you feel 50G are adequate to house a yellow and a hippo tang together as the kit would suggest. I personally feel that this isn't enough space for either tang, let alone both of them. And i hope you find yourself in the minority argueing the contrary. You just have to look at the shape of the lill guys to see thier requirements. I also feel that a strong, healthy specimin is well worth the space consideration, and in addition to this i also feel that a Tang of any sort in a 50 gallon will be stunted, and live a shortened uncomfortable, desease plauged lifespan as a result. Why bother?

Infact just checking back they do reccomend a purple tang, yellow and a kole for a 30G, you have to be taking the mick, i wouldn't even keep an oranda in a 30.

hi.
Chill out Mouse. As cleanup package, the tangs are meant to die after a few weeks, and used as food for the hermits and crabs.

It's difficult to make generalizations about tangs. Personally, the smallest aquarium that I would consider acceptable for a juvenile Zebrasoma tang or Ctenochaetus tang is 50 gallons. And I'm assuming that this is a well-maintained aquarium with adequate systems for the export of organic waste.

IMO, and IME, I wouldn't keep any Acanthurus species in an aquarium less than 4 feet in length and 75 gallons in volume. Naso tangs need 6 feet in length and 125 gallons. These are just MINIMUM recommendations. Bigger is always better! :)

Here's an example of my thinking: I love Naso tangs, but I won't purchase one, even though one of my reef aquariums is 10 feet in length and has a water volume in excess of 750 gallons. In addition to swimming space, these fish require a LOT of food just to maintain their body weight. It puts a tremendous strain on any system. I might consider a Naso tang if it were the only fish in my aquarium, but that would get boring. :)

So, I don't think we're too far apart on our thinking.

Hippo tangs are nearly useless for algae control. I don't see why they've included them.

You can also order a "cattle fish" (cuttlefish) from them...

Mouse, minimum tank size for tangs is a topic we've argued several times on the board ad nauseum. Was your intention here to point out a irresponsible site, or to start a discussion about tangs?

I agree with Greg here. IMO I dont think its impossible of to keep a small tang happy and healthy in a tank around 50 gal. Ive had a few in my tanks over the years(all under 65 gal) With few problems. I recently got rid of my yellow tang and I regret it. Im looking for another one but Im being very selective. Hey Greg any suggestions on a species?

I have a 90 gallon and have almost exactly the package they sell. (Naso, Purple, LMB, etc...)

Of course - my plan is to upgrade or trade the naso as it gets too big, I think in a tank essentially half as big, it's really not fair to the fish...

two small tangs is fine, but do the buyers know to remove the tangs when they grow larger?
Depends on who is talking. The seller, the common buyer, or the responsible buyer.

Frankly Greg, I don't understand your response. You should know better. I copy these two recomendations directly from one of their special for a 50 g tank. This is unresponsible vendor in my opinion.
Greg, How can you agree with this?
For a 50 g tank they recommended the below:

50 G. Package 16 Species Qty. Pacific Sailfin Tang 1 Naso Tang 1 Algae Blenny 1 Bicolor Blenny 1 Red Banded Snail 30 Scarlett Hermit 15 Giant Blue Leg Hermit * 5 Tuxedo or Long Spine Urchin ** 2 (total) Tiger Serpent Starfish *** 1 $220 delivered price, no extra charges
* Subject to substitutes with 12 Scarlett Hermit
*** Less $10.00 without Tiger Serpent Starfish
**

Tuxedo urchin subject to availability,

can be combination of :

- 1 pc. Tuxedo, 1 pcs. Long Spine or

-2 pcs Tuxedos or

-2 pcs of Long spine Urchin.

50 G. Package 23 Species Qty. Purple Tang 1 Naso Blond Tang 1 Algae Blenny 1 Bicolor Blenny 1 Red Banded Snail 30 Scarlett Hermit 15 Giant Blue Leg Hermit * 5 Tuxedo or Long Spine Urchin ** 2 (total) Tiger Serpent Starfish *** 1 $255 delivered price, no extra charges
* Subject to substitutes with 12 Scarlett Hermit
*** Less $10.00 without Tiger Serpent Starfish
**

Tuxedo urchin subject to availability,

can be combination of :

- 1 pc. Tuxedo, 1 pcs. Long Spine or

This is an example of crass merchandizing in live animals.

I am outraged.

We should all email the President of the Company expressing our disgust.

This is wrong period.

I can tell you that I will leave no stone unturned until this website is cleared of this garbage advertising.

I am outraged.

Hi Minh,

I can't speak for Greg, but I DON'T think he is agreeing with them.

What I think he takes exception to is the "hard and fast rule" like "you must have XXX gallons to house a purple tang. You must have YYY gallons to house a kole tang. You must have ZZZ gallons to house a naso tang."

See what I mean?

We all know that tangs need larger tanks than other fish, but is there a hard and fast rule that is accepted by everyone? No. Should there be? Probably not - as we all know, every tank is different.

Should reefkeepers excercise good judgement when purchasing fish? Of COURSE! I don't think anyone is arguing with that.

Cheers
James
