Hey everyone newb here, I started a 30 gallon saltwater tank on 9/02/03 it is now about 17 days old. I have just recently since the 15th day started to grow some brown-red algae stuff growing on the substrate. But i have not seen any spikes on my levels, NH3, No2, or N03, my pH is 8.2 and spec grav is 1.023 temp 78 F. i have two damsels and 4 lbs of live rock. Is there some thing wrong with my cycle or do i just need to be more patient? Thanks

If your live rock had been previously cured, you are probably through your nitrogen cycling. But that's only the first phaes. You'll likely go through various algal blooms for the next 6 months or so.
Keep an eye on your damsels. Watch their behavior and eating habbits. You should hold off a month or so before you decide to add another hardy fish.

I used to have a 30 gal long which had about 50lbs of live rock. I think your tank would fare much better in the long run with more than 4 lbs. Plus in my opinion would look better. I also started it out with 2 Blue Damsels which are decent looking fish, but in my experience they will not tolerate another species. They are very aggressive and I had to give them away. Hope you enjoy this wonderful hobby.

Your tank is more than likely cycling, however dan81 is right...i would go a Lb to 2lbs per gallon for LR...I had two damsels in my tank, one of which is MIA, and my clown keeps the other in check...they are supposed to be nasty little guys when it comes to territory...its good you are keeping track of your levels..a good practice to get into...Besides, your tank will look so much better with more LR...
