Fans blowing in from the back of the tank is the best way to used them. 55cfm is a good air flow for a 4 in box fan.But one thing that will help fans the most is to put a 4 in dryer hose on the back of the fan and let it hang down about 12 to 14 in behind the tank this will help stop the fan from pulling hot air at the top.You can chech your own fan by putting a thermometer at the back of your fan and chech the air tem going in. I hope this will help so that many of you will not have to buy a chiller and can get better used of your fans. Have a good day RGibson

I just cut a hole into each side of the hood and put mine in. This way they draw fresh air from each side. But I still have a clip on fan pointing at a 45 degree angle at the sump. Keeps everthing COOL. 8)

Does anyone have any idea of how much of a difference (evap. cooling) someone can expect off of a single fan blowing over your sump? The wife brought me home two 4" dia. A/C computer fans. So far, I've been using only one to pull air from my lights, but I was thinking of throwing the other one over the sump. FWIW, my tank is a 90 gal / 20 gal sump. It normally runs 10-12º warmer than room temp.
Any help appreciated.

Marco, only thing I can tell you is I have the two 3in. fans on each side of the hood. (See pics above) They come on with the PC's. They keep the tank cool (80) in the winter. I put the clip on fan (about six in.) on the sump (see pic above) in the summer. It keeps the tank about 82 degree. It also has a hi and lo switch on it. Walmart special. It also evaporates about a gallon a day more with the fan on the sump. My tank is 75 gal. with a 30 gal sump. Hope this helps.

I keep 101CFM fan blowing directly into the sump (salt creep!). Today was the first warm day of the season (reached 81) and tank hit 86 today.

I've never been able to keep the tank cool with just fans. Need the AC to cool the entire room to keep the tank in low 80's.

Im setting up my new tank
50 gallon breeder
30 or 40 gallon sump
800 gallon per hour recirculating loop
Borneman surge device
600 gallon per hour return pump
maybe aqua C ev 150
rock and sand sump
400 watt 6500k Iwaski Halide
2 55W Actinic PC's on Tank
2 55W PC's on sump
Im going to keep cool by having fan push aquarium air out window in heat
How do you guys think this aquarium will work out?
Am I over doing this?
I was thinking that having a huge skimmer and tons of water flow that i could feed very heavy but still have very clean water.
I thought i would put this were the gear heads put there post.
:)

Well yesterday it hit 82º here and my livingroom temp was 74º. My tank also reached 86º which is about as high as I want to go. Today I've got the AC running and left my halides off. The tank temp was 81.5 when I left this AM. I'm wondering what it'll be when I get home.

i broke down and got a chiller before the summer hit. It is an aquamedic 1/6th HP. It has been kicking in once a day since i have had it. So i bought a fan to help with the circulation around the tank.

the chiller sits about 6-8" from the wall. I had the fan blowing along the back of the chiller to remove the heat. it really wasn't doing what i wanted it to do.

So i put the fan blowing into the intake of the chiller. it is great. the chiller is chilling without being on. I am forcing air in the chiller, over the heat exchanger. it jkept my tank cool enought tha the chiller didn't come on. it is set to come on a 26.0 C. it hit 25.7 then didnt go any higher. I also keep a window cracked in the room to help with air circ...

I used to place a fan the blew on the face of the sump. that worked great for me.

If i were you i would save for a chiller. A JBJ or an Aquamedic.

they are the quietest... in my experience.... the Aquamedic only draws 160watts.. at 1amp i dont know what the JBJ does.

I have two fans, one blowing in, one blowing out. It works great. The air blowing out is like a heater for the house.

I run 5x6 inch kitchen fans, 3 in the hood the others around the sump. Yesterday i lost 5.5 gals of evap water, thats the most yet. My tank is set at 26.5 and yesterday it went to 26.8 but the fans stayed on nearly all day trying to cool.

I use (2) 4" radio shack fans blowing in the hood and a clip-on fan on the sump. This will be my first summer w/ halides so I hope this works.

Yeah, typical New England weather. When it was 82º here in Tewksbury, it was snowing in Burlington, VT. In 5 minutes the temp dropped 25 degrees in Newburyport. My tank dropped back down to 77 overnight.
