I am thinking of adding a sump for my skimmer. I already have a refugium 20G which sits under the stand.
I have 2 choices.

1) get a 10G tank and sit it next to the refugium and get the overflow in the sump instead of the refugium and then use a pump to send the outflow from the sump to the refugium.

2) get a 10G tank and set it up so its higher then the refugium put the overflow output in the sump and then due to the gravity send the outflow from the sump to the refugium.

In both cases I will be putting the ES5-2 skimmer in the sump
9"x9".

Folks which of the above is better and safe choice and how I can DIY or buy it cheap/

If I had that setup, I would put the 10 gal on top and let it gravity drain.

You will need to get it drilled for a fitting so it can overflow. Most of all you need to make sure the lowest container in your system will hold all the water that drains down when the power is off. (Very important)

There are many websites that sell bulkhead fittings, and some fish shops will drill a tank for you.

Have fun and stay dry

Remember , the simpler the better, usually

But if the power goes out then all the 10G water will be in my refugium which might flood the refugium . So u are saying the hole in the sump should be at the bottom , cant we drill the hole at a water level says 6" from the bottom if its a 12" tall tank. then only few gallons will go to the refugium which my refugium should be able to handle.

The other option is to set both refug. and sump next to each other and run a U tube between them to move the water from sump to refugium.
Is this is a good idea.

I mean that you should drill the hole in the sump tank near the top, so it will fill most of the way up before overflowing into the refugium.

So Water drains from the main tank

into the sump

goes through the sump and out the bulkhead fitting near the top of the sump

Drains into refugium

Goes through refugium and is pumped back up to main

This way, gravity does most of the work, you just have to pump it back up
