About a month ago, I began feeding marine snow, mainly for a non-photosynthetic gorgonian. Marine Snow was recommended to me by a couple of other people who have the same one. I have been feeding about 3/4 of the recommended dose, twice a week.

Over the last month, I have had an increase in a dark green (almost black) slime algae. I never had any before, now it covers most of my sandbed and one rock. Could this be related to the feeding of marine snow, or would it more likely be coincidence?

65 gallon AGA
28 gallon sump/fuge
SG 1.0235
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
pH 8.3
temp 80-82

Thanks!

I use Marine Snow twice a week also for the past year. Have had no problems. In fact I recommend it.

I wouldn't expect the Marine Snow to be a cause of the algae in your tank, it simply doesn't contain enough nutrients and I would bet they are stablized with EDTA and don't break down easily. Its more than likely coincidence and I would concentrate on increasing nutrient export.

Thanks, Tom. Kinda figured as much, after seeing the link Podman posted. Have already taken some countermeasures, and it was already starting to look a little better yesterday.

DTs is fine but let me also reccomend Bio-Plankton which has the advantage of several species of phyto of varying particle size - also it lasts longer as you can put it in the freezer (it has a glycerin base so won't freeze).

Also there is a new 'Coral and Clam Diet' that a local guy here swears by whose judgement I trust - check it out:

Jim is a heck of a nice guy and I trust his reccomendations on anything reef related , especially clams!
