HI there, :D

Bit new to the site but thougth I might ask a quick question. I am looking for some place to buy any type of algae eating livestock that is either tank raised or captive bred. I've tried a couple of searches but the best I have come up with is a company out of Hawaii.

I recently lost a cowrie and a sally light foot crab :( and my hair algae is starting to come up a bit. All my water parameters are perfect so I 'm almost positive it's the loss of these guys. I don't want to add any type of crabs, so most likey looking for snails, nudi's or fish.

Anything I put into my tank has to be tank raised or captive bred. Not beign snooty or anything I jsut don't want the guilt.

Can anyone give me some ideas.

Cheers

Len

No snooty at all. Quite commendable actually. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone who captive breeds snails or herbivorious grazers. I know conches are being bred commercially, but I'm not sure who sells them. Sorry I wasn't more useful, but I just wanted to say I respect your approach.

You're not the first person to post asking for captive "bread." I still haven't quite figured out what this is. More to the point, I haven't discovered just what wild "bread" is. If I knew this, I just might be able to help you find captive bread.
Wonder is OK for kids, but I like dark rye myself. As far as I know, it's captive produced. Wild bread might be kind of iffy, don't know for sure. :?

Sorry, couldn't resist. Looks like Len already took care of you anyway. Forget the nudis, they end up sucked into a powerhead or overflow in short order.

Best regards
Jim

Ever have one of those days. You think a Biologist could spell Bred. Thanks for the correction. I think the acetone got to my brain.

If there is a reef club near you, you may be able to find someone who has Strombus maculatus snails to trade. They are what IPSF sells as "strombus grazers." A little cousin of the conch. I got some in an IPSF order two years a go and I have probably sold/traded 200 to other reef keepers. As big as a bean, they reproduce easily in tanks, and if you don't have any snail preditors, you can grow your own nice little snail army.

I don't know why no one is selling these in stores, I think they are the most awesome snail.
