I recently upgraded the lighting over my 29 gal to a 250w MH Iwasaki 6500k and 2 55w PC actinics. I wanted to try SPS and started with a little 2 inch Acro frag I bought at my LFS.
When I got it, as you can see, the color was exquisite, neon purple and green on a mostly white base..

However.. it soon browned over...

I was a bit bothered by this.. but when I returned to the LFs a few days later, I noticed that ALL of the frags from that day had browned over in their tank as well.. much darker than mine, in fact..
I have noticed some decent growth, however.. it seems thicker to me...
The base has grown over the mounting epoxy noticeably...

What do you think? Is it doing well?

Thanks Brian..

The LFs I bought it from is actually quite an honorable one.. they basically wont sell you an SPS without grilling you about your tank first...

And by the time my grilling was done.. they had me second-guessing my conditions/water-flow... but from what I've learned from all of you guys, I was pretty sure I could go for it.

Worst case, I figured.. I might kill a 2 inch, $20 frag.. hehe

I'm glad to hear that it might actually be doing well..

PS- Do you think that pretty color will ever come back to it?

Looks AWSOME!!! It will most likely turn brown (as it is doing now) then it will slowly regain color. Coloring is different in everyone's tank but I bet that frag will regain it's colors very vividly!

Sounds like a good LFS...wait...isn't that an oxymoron ? :D Actually, we have a reputable LFS in the area as well.

Its hard to say whether or not that frag will color up with your lights. Some acros will turn brown under different lights and some will color up. This seems to be more common with some of the purple acros from what I have seen.

Hope that helps!

That is a great looking piece. I actually tried fragging for the first time last Friday. I have two 3/4" frags of Acropora Polystoma. They came from an RTN'ing colony that I purchased for $3. So far, they've turned to a deep purple with white polyps. The extension is great. I hope it doesn't brown up like reefsnreptiles mentioned. Good luck with yours.

Here's a little update on the growth and coloration of this frag.. I'm pleased with it's progress..

I'd say it has grown a little over 1/4 inch on each tip over the last 40 days or so..

BTW.. I have remounted it since the earlier pics were taken.. so its been rotated about 180 degrees from the above photos..
