If it is please tell me what to to as I understand they are bad news. Seee circled portion of the gooy green stuff that is growing in my tank. It floats and grabs air bubbles.

Thanks!

the pic is difficult for me to see. do you just have the one string?

i can't rule out dinos being on it, but no, this is not typical dino.

I can't recall what that is exactly but I do know it's not dinoflagellates. That's some sort of rock hitchhiker that uses a mucous strand to capture prey. Man I wish I could remember what that thing is called...

I had three blobs of it and this was the longest and most persistant string. Tonight I decided to get rid of some algae and this as well whatever it might be. I scrubbed the area with a scraper while siphoning it. I got most of it.

I hope it's gone but I am relieved that it may not be what I thought it was and I am sure it will be back in time.

I wish I had better pics but this is at the limits of my camera.

Whatever this is it is a trip. It can reach out like 6" (as you see here) in like 10 seconds then contract to 1" just as fast. I think it was pretty cool but I did not want to take chances as it was well within reach of my BTA and my lobotophytum.

I will update as necessary. Please keep ideas coming as it will most likely be back.

Thanks all.

It is just a tube worm. It uses that mucus strand to catch it's food. Some people like them. Some people don't . I don't care for them because I don't want my tank to look like I blew my nose in it!

I can't be certain from the pic, but i had dinoflaggellates for a year and a half. It forms strings of brown with bubbles between. It's also called snot algae, so that should tell you how ugly it is. It attaches to the rock and at times floats upward with the slimy bubbles attached.
I finally rid of it with very high circulation and extreme cleaning.
