Hello,

I am having great difficulty in removing these algae types from my 75 gallon mixed reef.

I have tried PhosBan and Phophate sponge and PO4 is below detection limits. I also have Chaetomorpha growing profusely in refugium. All other parameters are also good.

Parameters are as follows:

Temp: 80*F
SG: 1.025
Topoff: RO/DI
Ca: 380 ppm
Alk: 8.0 dKH
PO4: Below Detection
Nitrate: Below Detection
Lighting Main: 2x250w 14.000K DE
Fuge: 1x70w 10.000K DE (Reverse Photoperiod)
Skimmer: Lifereef VS2-24
Circulation: Tunze Turbelle 1000 gph and Mag 12 return
Livestock: 2 Ocellaris Clowns, 1 Orange Spot Shrimp Goby, 1 Kole Tang

Below are some pics.

Hey Marco!

I haven't seen that type of algea before, so I'm not quite sure what's is cousing it.

Would it be too much trouble for you to take the rock out and scrub it? It
would be easier now than latter if it continues to spread.

Good luck!

Interesting- I have the same two types growing in my reef, although they don't seem to be spreading too much. My rock came from Paragon, yours too? I'm not really doing much about them since my tank is only 6 months old- the fuzzy one is kind of unsightly though. My conchs eat it a bit....

Hi Guys,

The first two pics is spreading everywhere, rock, glass, poweheads, overflow tubes even (ironically) the algae cleaning magnet.

The other type is localized only on one rock, seems like a plating type. Also some on my queen conch too. Tank is 4 months old.

I have looked in several of my books and can't seem to get a positive ID though. Seems the brown algaes are really hard to identify.

No, I got it at Inland Reef, Nashua. Mostly Brazilian, some Fiji, some Tonga Branch.

I always thought these are types of turf algae. I have yet to find anything that eat them. But mine no longer spreads after addition of an short spine urchin, but the algae does not disappear either.

I've only rid of them by using a wire brush.

I would start topping off with distilled water....and add about 6 large Turbo Snails. My Turbo knocked down so much algae that it started a cycle goin in my tank that lasted about a week. The algae in my tank was takin up the nitrates befor that. I ended up adding more liverock and placin an extra skimmer on my tank till I could get things under control. It worked and my algae is no longer a problem. Now I just hope enough grows to feed my Turbos.

Thanks Guys.

I'm already using RO/DI topoff...thanks anyway. This stuff is stuck on pretty good. Haven't really seen the turbo's graze it much though. If it's not valonia, aiptasia, flatworms, red acropora mites, and cyanobacterium, it's another. :x

Don't worry......it is only exists in my Dream World...........however if it exists in that world then it could happen here too! Would make a cool movie ehhh? It would be called "Deadly Bloom". Dustin Hoffman could make another appearance recreating his role in "Outbreak" with Rene Russo and Morgan Freedman. Woweeeeeeeeeeeee! That would be cool.

I am going to look into those blobs you got. I am looking for a good Algae Book with good pic's for identification. Some real coll things grow in our tanks. Some can be very dangerous to us if handled carelessly.

Macro - I have some of those tuffs of algae on my rock too. I don't have as much, and it doesn't appear to be spreading very fast. I haven't seen anything in the tank eat any of it.

My LR came from the same place yours did. Hmmmm

Hi Baseman,

I seen my queen conch munching away a few minutes ago, that's good news. The bad news is there's enough algae for 5 conchs, but room for 1!
