hi.
1, make sure the wall the suction cup is being applied to is clean, smooth, and flat.

2, make sure the suction cup is flexible, and is not ripped, scratched, or punctured.

3, put some silicon between the suction cup and the tank wall will help, especially if the tank is glass

4, spit saliva on the suction cup will also help.

5, forget about items 3, and 4, above if the tank is up and running with water, etc.

6, try not to turn the powerhead on.

Also, check to see if heater suction cup would fit on your powerhead. I used to replace maxijet suction cup with the original ebo jager heater suction cups. The heater suction cups often work better, higher quality maybe, but definetly bigger in size.

You have to play around, maybe change only one of the suction cup to the larger size if the space won't fit.

Also, razorblade scrape the tank wall will definetly help.

(got acrylic tank? HA, tough luck............ )

A TINY amount of silicone in a big tank won't cause too much havoc. The odor from fresh silicone is from acetic acid- just like vinegar, only a LOT stronger. This odor is the only byproduct (?) which will leach into your tank. So since you have a big tank (or two) I think you could get away with a small dab of silicone on the suction cup. Run a polypad if you'd like.

fwiw, i would have to agree with the cleaning the surface part. i had a rotten time trying to keep those dang things suctioned to my glass -- then i tried scraping with a razor blade and it finally worked. dunno about acrylic surfaces though. :|
