Can I mount an RO/DI Unit Outdoors? I'm looking at the Mako 5 stage RO/DI from http://www.aquariumwaterfilters.com/RODI/Mako.html ... The problem is the storage tank's size. My garage is a nightmare as it is and I think I'm just better drilling through a wall to the exterior of the house and setting it up there. I'll more than likely build a little roof or something for some sort of protection from the weather but I'm sure humidity and the ocational stray rain might wet the unit and the in-line tds meter. Also how about those storage tanks? How well do they seal up to avoid contamination?

Thanks

Add a 40 gallon storage tank w/ shutoff $89
hi.
I doubt that the storage tank is 40 gallon. If it is indeed a 40 gallonbladder (pressurized) tank , It is worth the entire cost of the unit just for the tank itself, albeit at $89.

Anyway, yes, you can put them outside. However, for people who lives in colder climate, be aware that when the water freezes, the filter canisters as well as the membrane vessel will burst.

If the storage tank is a bladder tank, the fact that it is pressurized pretty much seal it against the elements. The TDS can be ruined by rain... so beware.

hi.
...oh, just in case I did not make it explicit enough, the storage tank is probably 3 or 4 gallons only, and most of the time, it fits under the kitchen sink...

Since you're in Miami you'll be fine keeping your equipment outside. I've plumbed whole closed systems outside, including pumps, the UV, chiller, and canister filter, RO units, mix/transfer pumps, and storage vats.

If it freezes where you live, forget about it. Pipes will burst and RO units will shatter. Not much fun.

I keep mine outdoors under a covered patio. It doesn't freeze too often here, but when it does, I simply unhook it and bring it inside. I doubt that you would have to worry too much about that in Miami though.

Mine is now in three pieces because I forgot to bring it in.
