I got an Ammonia Spike..after 5 months of stability....and no waterchanges. Gettin on it in the mornin. I got two many fish in my tank.....knew that last week. ............but I got stupid.and did it anyway. Bought three turbos that ate up alot of my algae this week and my Nitrates went up too! I guess I just had to learn the hardway. Take me out behind the barn and beat me.

I may take you up on that. Especially my inverts.....like my Star. He has been sluggish..thats one of the things that I noticed and caused me to test my water. I also noticed an increase in my skimmate.about three times as much. I was thinking that they were overfed or maybe somethong died..that I can not find. The only thing that I do not see is one of my Peppermints..but they are often hard to locate.

No I dont think a peppermint would cause a notable spike in your ammonia, Ive had two die at once in my pico reef and they were among the rocks so I just left them in there to be absorbed by the system in time, with no ill effects. There is just so little "meat" in them, not a whole lot of protein compared to a meaty fish or other larger invert like a star.

Amonia spike= die off of bacteria or death of larger animal, Id suspect a fish of some kind but if they are all there Im at a loss for an idea.

I had placed a baby snowflke in the tank and was messin with his feeding proram. Some pieces of krill and squid went uneaten. I think that is the cause. I am not going to feed amd let the tank continue to cycle. I use Ammo Block 2 so the ammonia is no longer an issue. I may place an extra skimmer on the tank today and run it for a week to see what happens.

Are you positive that thing is reef safe? A great, big, spiny sea star like that looks REALLY suspicious in my mind.

WOW, that looks nice

Yep..I have been over there to see it. It is really cool! I just put an additional skimmer on my tank to take out as much crap as possible. I am going to just let it cycle..no water change. I am in the process of settin up my new tank. I will keep everyone posted on any observations. My Purple Mushromms aer smaller and extending upward like a trumpet. The Thorny star is not on the move like usual just hangin out on the glass. My Ammonia is .25 and my Nitrates are 10. I am not going to feed my fish for a few days. My Coral shrimp Molted last night..and is very much alive. My fish are not showing any sign of stress. I bought the New Improved Version of the Seaclone 150 and have it running in the same 29 gallon tank with my Prism. I set it up to let alot of bubbles into the tank for aeration. This will reduce the stress on the fish during the cycle. Mt Turbos are still fine too. About 70% of my algae is gone now .....just within a few days of putting them in the tank. I really think this is why my Nitrates climbed up from Zero.

I hope that I have read this wrong but have you already stocked with fish before your cycling has finished ? I know we all have to learn as we go along but havent you read anything about cycling and stocking ? Do you not realise the strain and stress that you are putting your wildlife under ? Not to mention the possibility of killing your livestock. if i have read it wrong then I apologise, if not then whats the point of even reading these discussion boards ?

It makes me sad to hear this because it is true for most people.

I've yet to ruin a tank. (Knock on wood). Lost some great propagated corals when my roomate turned off the A/C one weekend in summer. And a few fish, but no catastrophes at once.

I have not ruined anything yet. Got a handle on it. The only animal showin any chang is my Purple Mushrooms are not opening up as much. The other shrooms are ok so far. My other fish and inverts are showing no stress. Ammonia .25 Nitrites .25 Nitrates 5.0. I just added an additional skimmer to remove more disolved solids, provide more oxygen, and keep carbon dioxide down. I am making room for my larger tank now for my Foxgace and Eel.

If the nitrites rise much more I will do a waterchange. I have two skimmers goin and I already see an improvement with my Thorny Star..he is much more active. I believe as long as I keep the oxygen level up and the carbon dioxide down they will be fine. I ordered my substrate today for the 85 gallon..and have the room all set up now.
