I have been reading the posts about anemones and the difficulty of keeping them alive for any length of time. I have several in my tank that came with the live rock several months ago. They are really interesting creatures and the clown/anemone relationship makes them a real crowd pleaser. Most of the time they look really great, but at others they are worrisome. I have included a couple of pics of 'Igor'. He arived as a rather beat-up and pale critter. We feed him 3-4 times / week with shrimp, and plenty of light. The water parameters are always "0" with the occasional trace of nitrates. My wife feeds rather heavy, she likes to see the other fish feed too. Last week Igor's oral disk became enlarged. (looked almost like a poppy bulb before flowering) and a stringy, slimy discharge was emitted. The clown even helped pull it out. I had never seen this before. Is this normal, or should I be worried?

the other two anemones in the tank have not shown any problems and seem to be healthy. Frank and Stein both seem to like to hang out together. At least they don't fight.

Looks like you have a couple of condylactus anemones. They're pretty common and relatively easy to keep--they're much more tolerant of lower lighting and less-than-perfect water conditions (not saying your tank does or does not fall into that category, just talking in general about the anemone). It's rather surprising that your clowns will go to them, as they are rarely a host anemone. Stranger things have happened, though. ;-)

When the anemone 'deflates' it is usually going through a digestion/waste removal cycle. Since they're such simple creatures their oral opening is also their anal opening, and the slimy discharge you noticed was remants of the digestive process.

Cheers,
John

Thanks sharkey....I was hoping that was the situation....all the tanks inhab. seem pretty healthy at present. I have a frustrated clown, the host anemone took up residence on the side of a rock and at nite when the lights go out, the clown keeps falling to the bottom of the tank...can't seem to stay with his buddy....and when Igor decides to deflate and hide, the clown will hang out with another anemone....must be one of those slut clowns....lol
