I just add 2 pagodas to my 72G reef.
after few hrs it is spiting this hair like mucus from the polyps on it.
Any one know what is this and is it safe for the reefs and fish.
all the polyps on it are fully open and it do that for few hrs every day.

My other question is : Is it safe to use those stainlees steel tongues in the aquarium. I bought one from the LFS and observe
that its getting rusty after use of few days.

Thanks.

Sorry for not noticing this earlier. Admins have been very busy as of late ;)

I'm going to move this over to the General Reef Discussion Forum (GRD) since it's more appropriate for that forum. you'll also get the answers you want there.

Lemme start off with some answers. The mucus stuff can be one of several things, ranging from natural shedding of the epidermis to excretion of things ranging from bacteria to excrement to zooxanthallae. If the coral itself is looking fine, it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Stainless steel is not suitable for saltwater. Even surgical grade SS will corrode in saltwater with continual exposure.

hi.
There are several different kinds of stainless steel, and as Len said, most are not appropriate for saltwater. For stainless steel, I won't use anything but 316 grade. Same for titanium. For heat exchanger, I don't use anything but CP grade titanium.

Anyway, there are many exceptions, and for your case, just make sure you rinse the tongues with tap water after each use, and you will be able to get most of of it.
