What is this furry thing that lives with my human? Is it okay or will it kill the houseplants? Should I try and remove it or leave it be?

Proteus II (my Clarkii clown)doesnt seem to like my hands in the tank, so i imagine he has some colorful words for me(he always nips my hands and startles me)...but the ? is what would you say if you were trapped in a tanK???
