I have searched numerous pages of old threads on the Euroreef, and I havent gotten a satisfactory explanation. My understanding is that the water is returned through the tube on the side which goes straight up. Doesn't this make a lot of noise as the water returns to the sump?

I am using a 55g tank as a sump, the CS8-2 is 24" tall, My understanding is that the skimmer is not to be in more than 8" of water. it seems to me that that would be quit a ways for the water to fall. I know that the 24" includes the collection cup. I just think that pushing the water up into the air would be noisy.

Everyone says they are quiet.

I have to be missing something

Please explain and post pics.

Thanks

Since no one has replied, I'll give my thoughts. I have a CS6-2 and, yes, the water overflowing from the outlet tube creates some noise. But there's noise and then there's NOISE. To some, the sound of water "gently cascading" over the top of the tube is pleasing. To others, the sound of "a couple hundred gph splashing" into the sump would be annoying.

My sump is in my basement so for me it's a non issue. However, I have to admit that it took me awhile to get used to the sound. For a few weeks after setting up the Euroreef (couple years ago), everytime I went down into the basement, for an instant, I associated the sound with a disaster like an overflowing sump, refugium, etc.

Aside from the water sound, the Euroreef is almost silent since the pump is submerged. It's tough to say how loud the splashing is (and it will vary depending upon how you adjust the outflow tube). It's nowhere near as annoying as a standard AllGlass overflow kit, but louder than a Durso standpipe setup.

Ah, it is silent because of the riser tube which it flows over gently...if that was the biggest noise I had to contend with around here, I'd be pretty happy...

There is a sponge that fits over the riser tube as well. Clean it regularly. The coarse cell sponge they have is the one I like best. 8)

Ah, yes. Emily is correct. I forgot about the sponge. I've long since removed mine (got tired of cleaning it). With the sponge in place the sound is reduced to a sort of "trickle".

it is quiet, the water flows up but just barely over the end, and once its broken in, it will than flow down outside the riser tube...if needed you can raise the sponge up the length of the tube....it was noisey for the first hour or so, than it quieted down........you dont want the riser tube too high anyways or your foam will be too wet, I have so the top of the foam is even with the union

Although I haven't put mine into production with my new 180 (can't I get an electrician who actually wants to do the work :? ), I am going to use a modification I learned about here, although I can't remember who it was from or I would give credit where it was due. Bascially, take a 1.25" PVC T and fit one end of the "top" of the T to the ER output. Then take a 1.25 elbow and attach it the the "downward" part of the T (it should be perpendicular to the normal ER output). Then attach a length of 1.25" PVC to the elbow so that the slapsh is minimal. None of the fitting need to be cemented since you are not dealing with high preasure flow and it makes it easier for cleaning. FWIW.

I took off the sponge, and put lots of macroalgae in the water where it hits the surface. It dampens the noise of the water falling 6" or so.

I have mine sitting in about a foot of water so the top of the outlet pipe is almost at the level of the surrounding waterline - no falling water noises. I took the sponge off too...

You should raise the little output pipe above your water line. The waterline can't be above the pipe, otherwise there is backpressure.

I thought the euroreef was supposed to sit in no more than 8" of water?

I noticed that in your post - that's why I mentioned mine is in deeper water. As long as the output is not submerged it doesn't seem to matter.
