I have a reef 40 gal reef tank that I have been running with LR LS a CPR back pac and aqua clear 300 plus a couple of power heads for circ. I have had pretty good results so far. (knock on wood)
I have been contemplating whether or not to add a sump. Please bare with me on this question but other than water circ and added oxygen what other advantages are there to keeping a sump.
P.S. I'm sorry I just couldn't resist on the subject title

It can give you added water volume, if set up for it a place for a refugium, a place to dose kalk/top-off/etc outside of the main tank, and, one of the nicest things IMHO, a place to hide some of the unsighlty equipment out of the main tank (heaters, probes, skimmer, etc).

The sump also allows space for more liverock and livesand, which can improve water quality pretty well, and as mentioned, it can act as a refugium... the reason I put a sump on one of my tanks is to increase the food supply for thee little mandarins.

With a sump, you can move some of the clutter in the main tank down below. Sump is also a great place if you are dosing chemicals, buffers, kalkwasser.....etc. Depending on where you live, if you will be using a chiller, you would want to run the chiller probe in the sump...........(a big probe doesn't look great in the main tank, trust me.
