I left my DTs out on the counter for 2 Days . . . Is it still OK? Even though it has been 101 degrees in Boston, this room never got over 78. It doesn't smell bad, but I am afraid that the only way I am going to know that it ISN"T OK will be when my corals start to fade. What do you think? Should I flush $$$ down the drain - literally? I can get more this weekend at Inland Reef . . .

DT's nutritional value diminishes without refrigeration. Unlike active culture vessle, where food, agitation and light are continuously given, DT in container without refrigeration goes bad very quickly. Studies has been done at UC Davis that DT's stored at room temp degrades quickly, and fouls completely at about a week. It's your call, but I wouldn't if it were I. On the other hand, the study also showed DT's stored at 4C kept it's nutritional value up pretty well up until about 4 months.

R&B, Would you drink milk or fresh squeezed juices stored at room temp after 2 days? They were originally made at room temp as well!

I think a sniff test is in order.

It is supposed to smell really really bad when spoiled.

Most company mail DT overnight, not 2-3 days. Moreover, if the MO place did not place cold-pak in with the packaging, maybe you shouldn't buy from them in the future.

Guys, get a copy of Marine Fish and Reef 2002 annual. There is a very good article comparing DT, Tahetian blend, Spray Dried Marine Plankton, Marine Snow, and one or 2 other commonly used planktonic food under various conditions. I'd suggest all who intend to use either of these products to read that article.

I think you need to look around. I picked up my copy from my LFS last month. Someone recommended me to pick up that copy at the time, and my LFS happens to have one or 2 left.

If you (or anyone) can't find any, PM me your fax number and I will fax them to you. But with the fax, you loses colors on the charts and may be a bit hard reading to your eyes trying to figure out which line is which on the graph.

In the same issue, there is also the article by Sanjay on light comparison.

DT's doesn't go bad at room temperature - it loses it's nutritional value. BIG difference. If left out for 7 days it should have no bad smell. More than likely it can go for weeks or months and not get a bad smell however it won't have any nutrional value to it because of nitrogen starvation.

So there are issues with shipping in the summer months as a) the product has to be shipped from Dennis to the retailer, then b) if mail ordered it must be shipped to the customer and most common method is USPS Priority Mail which is usually 2 day.

At four days of no refridgeration the nutrional value is about 50% of what it was when Dennis bottled it. See : http://www.dtplankton.com/storage.htm

FWIW our DT's is overnighted to us - is always still chilled when we get it and we obviously store it in a fridge. We normally ship it USPS PM for mail-order - however we don't normally use cold packs. We could if asked - but normally don't, and maybe I'll rethink that.
