Chiller's X-10 once burned out, and kept the unit on "on" for a day. Tank temp went in the 50's ..... lost 1/2 my stuff, including some nice fishes :? Switched over to the heavy duty X-10s.

Oh my 50 gallon (about a decade ago), the return pump failed and I found most of my animals in pretty bad shape the next morning (lost 3 fish). Which pump? Rio, of course. No more Rios.

Heater once exploded when the water level was too low (bubbles from the overflow bombarded the heater). Bleached my tank due to a combination of stray electricity and melted plastic. Titanium heater is on my tank now.

From every diaster, something is learned.

Anyone remember the guy who posted the picture of his tank that exploded? Glass shards were stuck in the far wall across the room.

I think about that guy all the time when eating dinner (my tank is in the dining room). If the tank was to explode when you're infront of it... it would have to be fatal.

Yes, I had one major tank wipeout back when I was first starting in the hobby...the tank hadn't been set up for more than six months, though. This one was probably my fault. I went away on a long vacation, trusting a neighbor with feeding the tank. I'm sure you can all see where this one is going. Massive overfeeding and a unaged/balanced small tank spelled doom for all fish life. *winces*

Sorry, only similiar incident I recall was when John Rice's 450g broke... although that one was acrylic.

About 6 months into the hobby, I learned to quarantibe the hard way..

A non-quaratined Coral Beauty died when I was on vacation. The dead fish sat for about 4 days...

During the same period, my protein skimmer clogged and went kaput, and I had forgotten to replace my phospate absorbtion media in my sump..

Needless to say, Velvet struck killing all fish, except for 2 damsels and a goddamn snowflake moray that i never should have put in that reef in the first place..

When I look back, it was my first batch of fish and the selection was not very well planned. It may sound bad, but I was glad to start over and restock slower and with smarter selections.

Yeah, I remember the pics of water pouring out of the crack and I wondered how he could stand there clicking pictures. He forgot to plug his fans back in after working on the lighting.

I remember about two years ago on this board a thread titled "Why are they coming up?" Apparently the person had used BRASS fittings in his plumbing and the sandbed worms were crawling to the surface and dying. Dr. Ron Shimek had suggested he chuck his copper contaminated rock and sand 8O . I think the rock and sand were worth about a $1000.

Charles, It was a guy at England. I think his glass is only about 1 cm thick.......if I remembered correctly.

Never had one and am almost afraid to even say that (but knocked on wood to be safe) :)
Probably because I live by the "what if" principle and am overly cautious.

I had a reef tank that somethign on it cracked, causing a flood, worst of all my bros were away and I couldnt do much and everythign started to die. A year after that I finally got 2 humu humus (which were healthy for a few months then one day one just got sick and died that night and the other "died" the day after (I found the body under the tank a month or so after that [I don't know how it got under the tank as opposed to the side of it]. I didn't do anything since then and took the tank down and soon I hope to start a tank thats somewhere near 30 gallons.

Temps reached 116 in Sacramento about a month ago. I lost stars, shrimp, and crabs after 6 wks. of cycling...

my only disaster was totally self made. when i first got into this hobby i was an idiot. i bought a big spong even though i knew nothing about how to keep it it just looked cool. about two months later i knew it was starting to get a little funky but didn't want to just pitch it. so i left it in, in reality it was already dead and starting to rot. came home from work one day to find all my fish laying on the bottom gasping desperatly and the tank stunk so badly. lost a damsel and a blue tang, everyone else made it through with the 80% waterchange. definatly a big step up the learning curve.

I came home from class one night about 11. Open the front door and the first thing I hear is the sound of aquarium pumps that are running dry. At that moment I knew I had a problem. A coupling had split on the closed loop on the 175 in the bedroom. The tank was <1/2 full and the sump was empty. Water from the closed loop was spraying all over inside the cabinet. Took 24 hours to get everything back up and running. Lost 2 small frags and a few pieces of green slimer where the side facing, the fan that stayed on thought the draining process, died. Otherwise everything was OK. The amazing thing was that I replaced 75 gallons of water, but with the shop vac I only vacuumed up 5, don’t know where the rest went. I assume the slab foundation has a crack.
