I am considering getting a dwarf angel (centropyge sp.) for my 55. I have heard and read that they nip at corals and clam mantles. Is this always the case, rarely or what? They are really beautiful fish, but I really want to be a responsible buyer.

What are people's experience with these fish and what kind of corals are you keeping them with?

Thanks for the help!

I have kept the cherub (C. argi) with LPS,SPS, softies and clams without problem for well over a year, maybe two. (that is until the little bugger found a way out the back of the canopy! )

I have also kept the Coral beauty with softies and LPS corals.

I feed alot, some say this is what makes the difference.

Remember that all fish are individuals. I currently have a hippo tang that is NOT reef safe, (Eats leather corals and open brains) but in general they are good fish for a reef.

DVB,

as a general rule, dwarf angels are not reef safe. Pigmey angels are. However, as Mulberry pointed out, that is not set in stone. There are a lot of factors that could intervene, such as size of tank, other inhabitants, feeding, etc.

In other words, you take a chance! :D

I've had great luck with C. argi. Loads of personality, and they don't bother anything. The few that cause problems are the exception, not the rule.

I've tried 14 distinct species of Centropyge, and none of them were 100% reefsafe. And FWIW, they are more often then not impossible to catch once introduced. So bottom line is, i wouldn't again. (I am rather stubborn and stupid, it would seem .... 14 times to learn a lesson! ;) )

I have a C. argi that nips at my maze brain and clam occasionally. I have no chance of catching him unless I dismantle my tank. I wouldn't`add one again.

As stated earlier in the string....All fish are individuals....Keep him well fed and talk to him about how much you care about your SPS,LPS, Clams and you will be fine.

I plan on adding a bellus angel and golden to my 75 gal SPS and am not too worried about it. A little nip here and there will probably annoy me more than the clam or coral. I have never heard of a case of a dwarf angel just mowing down a tank.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Leonard, can you elaborate on 100% reefsafe? Is it the occasional nip at a coral or actually eating some of the corals and clams. How much damage occurs with these angels? Is it mere irritation or actual damage?

dvb..

my first reef was a 55g. i had a multicolor, flame and potters. the multi basically was the boss. chased everything it thought it could intimidate, and initially nipped clams and various lps relentlessly. a major aggitation for me. after a while, it didn't bother the clams or corals. i now have a 300g almost entirely sps, but a few softies too (brains, blastomussa, leathers, zooanthids, wellsophyllia etc). multibarred, multicolor, venustus, flame, and colini are all in there now. i've spent hours observing them to make sure they don't eat anything they're not supposed to, and they don't. maybe since there's close to 600lbs of tonga LR they don't bother the clams/corals. i have a purple tang which is the 'boss, and an emperor and a goldflake angel in there also who aren't intimidated, so they seem to keep the multicolor in check. the colini, venusta and multibarred are rather shy, but do come out once they feel more secure.

if you're going to get more than one, and/or especially one of the more 'reclusive' species, make sure there's plenty of hiding spaces, you don't have aggressive tank mates, and you add them first so they can get comfortable. however, i would consider adding a multicolor later on since it tends to be quite aggressive. unless you're expericenced, i would avoid delicate species like colini, multibarred, and venustus etc. personally, i think the flame is the way to go...great color, relaxed attitude, likes to be in the open, and will eat flakes/pellets.

as for physical damage they cause, i haven't seen any actually 'eat' a coral. polyps don't appear to be missing after they nip at it like some of the non-pygmy angels might do. however, if they harrass clams enough, the clam will not expose it's mantle enough during the day to get the required amount of light it needs and could therefore die. keep in mind tho that once it goes in, your pygmy isn't coming out alive.

hope this helps,
Doug

Keigo...

my emperor is small (3"). he's well fed, since i feed the tank everyday (i have a school of anthias that eat constantly) and he loves Spectrum Thera A pellets and brine shrimp soaked in selcon and garlic. in the begining he sampled some of the softies, but after a few days he didn't bother anything at all, possibly because he eats everyday. i'm not sure about the koran and french. do a search to see what others have experienced.

good luck!

I have a midnight who seem's to find pleasure in nipping at the acro's and things with no damage to them yet. The only problem with the midnight is the reclusive behavior and timidness at feeding time. Very beautiful fish when seen in the open water.......
