I was just browsing some of the amazing Japenese tank sites and came across these two pics. Does anyone have an ID or info about either of them? Or knowledge of other small, schooling reef fish? I think it would be great to keep a group, and the smaller size the better for my 50gal.

No idea!

I have a small group of Apogon leptacanthus and they keep the tightest school of any fish I've seen. With no other fish in the tank they get lax, but with other fish in so far they stay close. Beautiful and peacful, but not easy to find.

cool, they remind me of vintage WWII zero planes, :D if it wasn't for the corals in the tank I would say they were freshy's.

DanConnor-Do you happen to have a pick of the -Apogon leptacanthus-?
I want ideas about any small schooling fish, not just the ones in the pick. Info is much appreciated :D .

They do look like little missles or somethin huh? :P
They looked like fresh water fish to me at first too, or fry of some sort.

this isn't my pic- they are prettier than this- eye and eye area is deep blue like cobalt blue glass; yellow and blue stripes on sides; some blue in fins; fine turquoise line along dorsal edge.

not as bright as some SW fish, but have a subtle beaty and look great in a group.

DanConnor- Very neat. I'm definitely gonna look into a group of those. (how many do you have in your tank and how large a tank do you keep them in?)

Any other pics and/or info out there on small sized, schooling fish for a reef tank? (info on types, feeding, size tank kept in?)

justin :)

Maybe they're some sort of brackish fish that live in some of the tidal basins in Japan?
They are cool though...

Are you guys SURE they aren't tetras and the coral in the first pic is fake? I've seen some pretty realistic looking fake coral.

Look at the closeup at the bottom pic from the first poster-you can see the polyp's extended, and I don't think they've gotten that good with the artificials. They do look a lot like some of the freshwater species though.

They aren't tetras - they lack an adipose fin behind the dorsal fin.

Cool fish though!

So i'm sure they are saltwater fish, but i hadnt seen anything like them either. They are pretty cool looking. I just wish I could ID them. Unfortunatly most of the site that the pics are from is in Japanese

Those are definitely some fine looking corals. I saw a local resturaunt who uses colored spotlights to give certain corals that same look. Not sure if that is the case here. Great page...

Take a look at this incredible crab. Looks like some sort of arrow crab. Can anyone identify?

The fish in the top pic look like the might be some kind of cardinalfish, and they look hungry.

(how many do you have in your tank and how large a tank do you keep them in?)

I have 3 in a 120, but I'm looking for a couple more.
