I bet you a dollar that those Mag pumps that Jeff had returned were Mag 7's...we all know the story behind those. I had one, everytime the power was cut it would not restart. I had to lift it up, out of the water and slap the $h!t out of it to get it started. As much as I hated that pump it never burned up and polluted my tank like the Rio did.

I dunno. I just went to his site and the standard option is a Rio 3100 and a Magdive 950. So I assume it was the 950's.

Has anyone ever heard of a RIO 3100 destroying a tank?

I too had a rio 2100 burn up, luckly it was the sump return, and it burned up in the sump, so the tank was fine

VERY lucky

the sump was NASTY, black tar and it smelled horrible

I dont use glass heaters anymore either, electricty & copper wire & water = instant copper disolved into tank

i for one, will gladly join the 'i like the rsb's' club-even if we are the only two members

every problem i've run into with rios-my own, the ones i've uesd in lfs's, and the ones that failed for my customers, seemed to be connected to a sealing (epoxy) issue-for the most part, shorts/leaks into the water.

Could be Jeff wised up and switched to the Mag 9. The 7 is the only Mag pumps I know of that had problems. I use two 12"s and a 2 and have never had a problem with em. As fas as the 3100 burning up, I'd do a search on it. I was lucky when my Rio burned up. I was in the middle of upgrading and had a tank 3x larger thathad just cycled. It wasn't really ready for corals but it was better then the polluted tank.

And I was told that you must return the broken part to them in order to get a new one. If you lost your broken impeller, you are screwed and have a worthless skimmer!

No, I had a worthless skimmer to begin with anyway (Berlin)... BTW, have you SEEN the impeller.....try and break that under normal conditions and maintenance.

Actually, there is a WARRANTY..... 8O And the price is worth every single penny if one needs to get parts, at least for me.

I had to return a defective pump and was shipped a new one first....... I needed the packaging to return the other one safely. There is no way if you have a good track record with a retailer who carries the ER that you will be treated badly, or at least I wasn't.

Berlins 8O ....you guys crack me up.....  bring me a radish....hic.... :P

Technically explain what's wrong with the berlins, they have excellent contact time, their only fault I'm aware of is a weak venturi.

Correct me if I'm way off base

What is wrong with red sea skimmers exactly i got a prizm pro delux it is the greatest skimmers i have had. Great contact timeeasy to maintain opac casing=less cleaning. BTW i had a rio 2100 burn up about 6 months ago. Luckily caught it in time it caused no damage to my reef.

I sent a link to this thread to Jeff at Lifereef and he reposned as indicated in a new thread that I created. I started the new thread since the subject is far off this topic and thought the pump issue needs further debate.

As far as the skimmate issue, there was someone here who posted the results of which produced the best(nastiest) skimmate. If I remmember correctly ER had the nastiest.

Here's what my Euroreef produces in about a week. There's no smell under/around the tank while the skimmer is running. The stench just about gags me, however, when I clean out the collection cup! :)

So you have to tear it down once in a while, huh? :P

Yeah, I usually give my ER a good overall cleaning about once or twice a year, but then again I did that with any skimmer I ever owned. My personal preference is the ER not only on performace, but also based on the long term cost to operate. It requires a much smaller pump than comparable becketts, so you save on energy as well, which somewhat helps to offset the usage costs of the halides. :?

But I agree with you Louey, if you go with almost any of the skimmers mentioned here you can't make a "wrong" decision.

once a year?...it should be at least once a week....
