O.K. I know this has been asked before; I tried to search for it, but had no luck. What is the best skimmer? Well I guess I should refine the question. What is the best skimmer for me?

I have a 55g tank, right now it is FOWLR, but I will be getting more stuff like inverts and corals. I need to learn more before I tackle those. I am going to be building a new stand and canopy for my tank and it will have a built in sump. The sump will be about 30g. I have 2-175w M.H. and 2-40w N.O. actinics for lights. The return pump I have not decided on. I will be running two 1" overflows with two 3/4" returns. The sump will also include a refugium. If you need any more info. let me know. I can reply virtually instantly.

Thanks,

Michael

I worked more on the design and found that I can only fit about a 20g sump. Well still not a bad size I think. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Please keep them coming.

I would put the largest Euroreef skimmer that will fit {measure your footprint available} this is the MOST IMPORTANT piece of equipment you will buy for your system...I have a CS6-1 in a 10 gal plastic tub....I very little excess room after the return, heater, skimmer, and return pump...and I always thought my water was clear when I had REmora skimmer on the tank...iys like night and day...comparing what I have now, and what I had.....

I'll put in a 3rd vote for the Euroreef. I know own a CS8-2 and absolutely love it compared to other skiimers I have had previously. They may look at little more exspensive at first, but when you compare that they come with the pump, have a far lower engergy comsumption and pull out as much skimmate while processing less water that most becketts, it is a pretty easy choice, IMO. Here is a good link on skimmer comparisons.

Below is a picture of the skimate of my Lifereef skimmer, a couple of days after I emptied and cleaned the cup. The skimmer can produce a wet or dry foam by simply adjusting the gate vale on the output of the skimmer. the skimmer also has a self celan venturi that virtually elimates maintenance.

I have been looking at various protein skimmers myself, and found this site when I was doing a search on Euroreef skimmers. The skimmers are called ASM skimmers, and the site claims that ASM is a company that broke off from euroreef. According to the site they are almost identical in design and just as effective. However some parts are made of PVC instead of acrylic to make them cheaper. The prices are pretty reasonable as skimmers go.

Has anybody had any experience with these?

Do the euroreef work with waste collectors? Ie when the waste collector is full it shuts off the skimmer.

I love how my HSA 1000 and most all of the becket clones work this way. L8r mega

Never left it long enough to need any kind of waster collector. For the average reefer, Euroreef collection cups are huge .... 8O

And since the Euroreef is not finicky, not required IMO. :P

Another vote for Euroreef

I take it that means they dont work with a waste collector?

having ran a skimmer that uses one, I would never go back to without. It's so nice, shuts down the whole skimmer when full. It would be like giving up my cruise control on my car, rarely use it, but it's damn nice to have.

I've tried 2 skimmers, a berlin HOB and a Euroreef CS6-1 on my 55g. The berlin is a piece of junk compared to the cs6-1 in terms of the quality of the skimmate produced.

The cs6-1 is one of the best reef equipment I've made since getting addicted to this hobby :D

Another vote for the EUROREEF!!

-I'm not sure I understand the need for this waste collector vs any container that will hold water. I use a milk jug to collect excess skimate out of my collection cup. Long before it is full I need to clean my skimmer, so what would be the need for the waste collector?
