I recomend 1.017 reason is, Ick can not live very well at that low of a level. And you fish will have no problem with the low salinity.

Those numbers look like specific gravity, not salinity. In any event, I keep my FOWLR tank at the same specific gravity as my reef tank - 1.025.

Ditto. The "live" part of your LR will like 1.025-1.026 a lot better than 1.019. Fish can go anywhere from 1.015-1.030 though.

I think it depends on what type of fish you want to keep, and your priorities. I have a FOWLR tank, and because I have tangs and a adult emporer angel in it, for me the 75-150 dollar fish are the highest priority.

This is not correct. Lowering salinity has no effect on ick until you get much lower than that. Lower salinity is not healthy for the fish and definitely not good for the life on your LR. I recommend using natural sea water levels which aer 35ppt or a specific gravity of 1.0265.

well, the 1.017 has worked for me, for over a year now. And my LR, its still alive and doing well. My FOWLR tank consist of one purple tang, one powder blue tang, one adult emporer angel, one fireball pseudo, and a few other fish that are not very acceptable to ick.

Maybe the salinity is key, maybe its not. Maybe its the everyday feeding of garlic soaked food, maybe its not. Maybe its quarantine of a fish for 30 days before it is allowed to enter my main tank, maybe its not. But regardless, then is what has worked for me, after numerous trials and errors.

The quarentine is what does it. Lowering the salinity just lowers the life expectancy of your fish.

I am not being critical, just trying to clarify that there is no evidence that moderately lowering your salinity has any affect on ick.

There is really no profilactic benefit to running a hyposalinated tank.

Ick is effected by rapid reductions from normal levels (1.025-ish) down to the 1.010-12 range. This must be done by a calculated, conditioned hyposalinity water change all at once (the faster the better). It is like shocking a pool.

Short term reduction in salinity will not effect the fish too badly, but it will osmotically reek havoc on the Ick life cycle.

Bringing salinity back up to normal must be done very slowly, over the course of two weeks or more.

I recommend a salinity that is in tune with natural levels. If I need to shock the ick, I have the range I need.

I have always treated my FOWLR exactly the same as my reef. Frequent water changes, good skimming, lots of good food to eat and water at NSW values.

there is no reason to run a fishonly tank below salinity levels than that normally used in a reef tank. 35ppt (sg 1.024-026)
As mentioned above parasites are un-affected by slightly lower salinity levels. You'll need to drop your sg to 1.009-1.010 to see any antiparasite effects

Keeping your tank at a sg of 1.019 does nothing but save you money on your salt costs, and this is not a valid reason.
