I am setting up a 55 gallon Lionfish Tank that will have a 65 watt Power Compact on it. I am looking for advice on other inhabitants that I could have in this tank. :?:
I think a 55 is a bit small for a Lionfish,,,when he is full grown he will reach 14", a 55 is only 12" in depth, I would want at least a 75 gal...it is just a shorter version of a 90...the 75 is 48x20x18, the 90 is 48x24x18. the extra depth will allow him to turn around in the tank....I had one in a 180 with a Queen trigger, and Moray Eel
I am thinking A Dwarf Lion and a Snowflake Eel. Any other Ideas.........I am not going bigger than the 55 because of space considerations and I already have most all of my equipment except a skimmer. I have heard that the Dwarf Lions do not ship well..........any comments on that? :?: :?: :?:
a 55 gal is too small for any of the medium bodied or large bodied lions, you'll really have to consider one of the dwarf species and infact your best bet is a dwarf fuzzy lionfish. They ship fine and wean over to prepared food readily.
As for the snowflake eel make sure you cover your tank and have sufficent heavy rockwork to prevent him from toppling the pile over.
These two should be fine together.
I REALLY recommend a Fu Man Chu!!! I think they are the coolest lion fish. Ours loved ghost shrimp and small mollies. Never tried prepared foods. We just keep a constant supply of ghost shrimp on hand. Had a 20 gallon with 500 ghost shrimp in it. We got them cheaper buying alot.
We have a large dog faced puffer with a zebra moray in a 125 gal. There is also a very aggressive domino damsel in with them and we just added a green bird wrasse for some activity.
We had a snow flake in another tank before and it jumped out. There was one place it could have gotten through (around the filter) and it found that place so keep that in mind.
i have a fuzzy red dwarf lion and a snow flake eel in a 35 gal octagon
my lion will only eat live food i give him guppies and my eel like krill
i feed then 3 times a week been together for about 6 monthsand booth are doing well
I would stay away from the Fu man chu especially if its your first foray into lions, They tend to ship poorly and are one of the most difficult to wean over to prepared foods, very stubborn little fish. I wouln't doubt their color or personality.
Second whenever and whatever species of lion you decide on needs to be weaned over to dead prepared SW foods, not guppies, or goldfish (althou ghost shrimnp are the best of the FW feeders, but not long term). Live freshies are not a good food source they contain too many problems which shorten the life span of most SW predators. Use Freshies, but not more than a few weeks to a month.

I like the Zebra Dwarf Lion .........other fish I am considering is perhaps a Clown Wrasse and Damsels(I like the Dominoe's). If my Lion eats the Damsels I can get some more. It would be nice to see something swimming at all levels of the tank.
How about a sargassum angler, or a frog fish.
With large predators and no coral, you have endless possibilities.
I have a friend with a 90 gal FOWLR and some great crustaceans. He has a shame faced crab about 3 inches wide, a couple of wild caught large porcelain crabs, and a dwarf lion with a puffer and a blue ribbon eel. The eel is a VERY finicky eater. Not sure what he eats but I know its been alive and healthy for over two years. Very Beautiful fish.
