My new tank will be here in a week. A 58 Oceanic.

I am debating on the sump configuration.

Skimmer only or skimmer and refigium.

Problem. The tank is only 36 inches long and 18 inches wide.

I wanted to use external pumps but I dont think I will have enough room.

I am also planning on adding a Calcium reactor that I would like to fit under the stand as well.

What are other people using this size tank or similar using?

I have the same tank as you, instead of putting the tank flat against the wall I put it in a corner of the room, my sump is actually behind my tank on the floor so as to make room for my overflow & refigium, if I hadn't of done that nothing would have fit other than the sump.

Dont have that option unless I put it part way in front of a window.

well, depending on how large your sump is you might be able to fit an external pump in there somewhere, you defiantly would have to have a refugeum/sump combo if you want a refugeum, your calcium reactor may fit in a corner opposite from your external pump.

your going to want some sort of water top off, I started off without one, during the summer I would have to fill up about nearly half a gallon of water every day, a chiller would fix that but it for sure would not fit, you might be able to fit a 5 gallon jug above your sump/refugeum combo by building some sort of shelf, but man, that would be tight.

what's on the other side of your wall?
If you had a closet on the other side you could use that space for your sump, with your sump out of the way you can add everything you want just about.

I have to say from experience, you don't have too many options with a 58 gal tank, it is better to go larger :?

The wall behind the tank is a hallway.

I would love to go bigger but that would cost alot more then I can do right now. I have a 46 bow (That I hate due to light options and filter options) and wanted to get a different tank. I figured I could use the lights from the 46 (which is 36 inches as wekk) temporarly on the 58 until I can afford a halide fixture.

If I get a bigger tank then it means I have to get the lights now and more LR now. Thats and extra $1000-$1500 easily on top off the tank and filters.

As you can see I am getting very frustrated.......

oh, wait, you could get one of those hang on the side refugeum, bring out the tank just far enough to hang it on in the back side, you could then use an internal pump in the sump along with your skimmer, the reactor should still fit, but your water top off may still be an issue, you would have to get creative. :D

oh, and give this thread some time before you get too frustrated, someone may pop in later with some better idea's. 8)

I got a Ecosystem40 (hang on) on the back that I hate as well. As water evaporates it blows bubbles constantly. If the tank evaporates over a gallon then inside the tank it looks like a blizzard.

Thanks for your help, just trying to do this right this time.

well, you don't really have to have a refugeum or calcium reactor, but you do need some sort of water top off system for sanity sake, I would concentrate on that first and figure out the rest later as you go, to me, that's the fun part, figuring out how to make it all work that is.

I would try to make some sort of refugium in your sump, cramming all the utilities in there is gonna be a pain, but i think the fuge is very important. It's what im working on right now.

I'm conserving space under my 75 by using a "remote" top off container. It's a 7gal Rubbermaid trash can sitting on a shelf across a "hallway" from the main tank and it's connected with a length of high pressure tubing, taped to the floor at the crossing. A Kent float valve regulates the FW flow into the sump. This enables my top off container to be much larger, more accessible, and to also be high enough to provide steady water pressure, even when it's water level is low.

The Kent valve was the most expensive part and it was only 20 bucks. (what a deal for how helpful it is) THT

I dont think there will be enough room under there for all of this.

What should I possibly do without?

Refugium
Skimmer
Calcium Reactor
Top Off

Unless someone can show me how to cram all of this under the tank.

You could make do without any of those things.

Refugium (Export nutrients and allow pods to reproduce) - instead you can do more water changes and build pod piles in the main tank that allow them to reproduce without predation.

Skimmer - instead do more water changes

Calcium Reactor - daily dosing of calcium - also depends on the calcium needs of your tank.

Auto Topoff - you are probably already adding topoff water everyday or every other day.

You have enough space to get maybe a 20 gallon tank and build sections in it for a small refugium and skimmer. You can then plumb an external pump to it. An acrylic tank is preferable so a bulkhead can be made to the side of the tank easily. The autotop off could be done on top of the tank, depending on the design you choose. Skip the reactor.

here is what i have always done. i put a cabinet of some sort next to the tank and stand, and put the sump, etc. in there. it can be disguised as anything. a trunk, part of the wall (finish it in drywall + paint), or whatever matches your room style. and you can make it as big or as small as you want.

good luck

The unfortunate thing is that I dont have any room next to the tank. Thats why I am only getting a 58 gallon tank.

I might skip the refugium and just go with a typical sump/skimmer setup.

I dont know anymore.

if you have the height available-howzabout a 29 gal. for the sump? (footprint is 30"x12")-skimmer can be raised on a 'block' in the sump-giving you height for a good dsb and enough left over for water reserve...

I would skip the reactor and use Kalkwasser in the topoff. The HOB refugium sounds like a good idea. Can you fit your skimmer in your sump??

Depending on how much room you have in the cabinet as far as height you can build the whole system you're talking about using shelves. It's going to take some planning to figure out the plumbing and placement, but it can be done.

Take it from someone who has no cabinet below his tank, all my equipment sits nexts to my tank in a cabinet I built myself. If you plan well and not get frustrated :D you can figure it out.
