It isnt worth using it. I set up my tank about a year and a half ago and used pool filter sand and aragonite sand. Mainly i did this because i was low on cash and wanted to set my tank up with a deep sand bed. I wish i now just saved my money and got all calcium based sand. I dont like the look, it is harsh on sand critters, and it scratched my glass. I would say pass on it but it is up to you.
From what I have read, the crystalline structure of silica sand has sharp edges. Aragonite sand does not share this problem, at least not to the same extent.
I've used silica sand now for over a year and have not seen any detrimental effects. I have plenty of stuff in my sand. Granted, my goal in my tank isn't to get the most diversity in my sand bed. The biggest problem is the look. To solve this I put the silica sand in the back and in lower layers. I then spread calcium based sand over the top and in the front. My silica sand was grayish though.
