I was reading some old threads and stumbled across one that said that a chalk bass would most likely eat any cleaner shrimp or peppermint shrimp that are housed in the same tank as them. Anyone have any experience with this? I put a pair of peppermint shrimp in my tank and they hide all the time. I'm able to spot them about once a week if I'm lucky. This morning was one of those days. :D I had a cleaner shrimp in the tank, but it disappeared, I assumed it died when my calurpa went sexual. That caused a lot of problems in my tank, but now I wonder if my chalk bass might have killed it. I was planning to get a few more cleaners and maybe some other types of shrimp for the tank, but I don't want to waste my money if they are just going to end up food for my chalk bass. Anyone have any thoughts?

as always TIA,

ryan,

any basslet is an omnivore in nature. just be careful.

although, you are right, if he could ever find the peppermint shrimp, then you might have a problem.

just be aware of one thing, most basslets, particularly chalkies and tobaccos are big, big jumpers. know that.

good luck to you.

FWIW, Serranus Tortugarum(aka Chalk Bass, Chalk Basslet) only grows to about 3" in length. I'd say unless the shrimp are very small you should be OK.

I have one with two Peppermint Shrimp and he shows no interest in them. They are about as big as he is. :)

My chalk jumped once, while I was feeding the tank. It came out of the tank and went right between my legs and landed behind me. I was afraid to move because I couldn't see where it landed and I didn't want to step on it. To make matters worse my golden retriever which was about 6 months old at the time was right behind me too, but luckily for me I think the dog was just as shocked as I was that the fish jumped. He just stood there looking. I grabbed the bass and tossed it back in the tank and it went about eating like nothing ever happend. The top of my tank is about five feet off the ground, and the tank is in the basement so the floor is cement. I think if I made that fall I would be fairly messed up.
