I am always dripping Kalk but today I tryed driiping it with vineger, I have never done this before and ussually when my light are out my alkalinity is 170- 175ppm. Tonight I tested it and it is 125ppm. Could this be because of the vineger. I mixed in 5 ml of vineger to a quart of kalkwasser. Any ideas. Thanks

I'm not familliar with that measure of alkalinity... Could u convert that to dKH or alk? What test kit gives that measure?!

Well, acid does eat away at your alkalinity, but how much kalk did you put in the quart of water?

Nevermind, I just tested it again and it is at 9.8 dkh with the lights out. I must have miss counted a drop. Also do you think dripping the kalk with vineger will have an impact on the alkalinity.

I re-tested it and it is 9.8 dkh I must have made an error on the first test I took. This is with the lights out. Do you think the if I keep dosing it with vineger it will bring down my ph or alkalinity. Thanks -Mike

why fix something if it aint broke???

what where your readings before mixing with vinegar. was your dKH reading too high?

how big is your tank? how heavily stocked? and how much do you drip? do you drip to supplement a daily dose of alk or do you drip to "Top Off"?

tell us more.

Also do you think dripping the kalk with vineger will have an impact on the alkalinity.

Vinegar in limewater with extra lime solids will result in more alkalinity and calcium delivered, because more lime dissolves. Depending on how fast your tank creatures consume the acetate, you may not see all of that alkalinity instantly.

Thanks Randy, that makes sense and now im not worried since if anything it would raise my alkalinity.

Suggestions on how to drip kalk?

Easiest: get a Kent Aquadoser. Mount it on the wall about a foot or two higher than your tank. Make up kalkwasser. Let it site for several hours.
Fill Aquadoser with kalkwasser. Set drip roller to about a drop per second. You're done.

Harder but cheaper: do a search on DIY kalk dripper. Follow the instructions.

I use old water jugs for my water cooler and an IV dripper I got from a medical supply store. Works good.

Royy, just a word of warning if storing kalkwasser: The high pH must break down the plastic in these ubiquitous water cooler jugs. The first 3 to leak, no problem. I was there when they started. No mess. Not so with the last 2. Had about half of two (read 5 gals.) leak out overnight. What a mess.
The first two or three jugs I thought was a fluke, not anymore; they were also two different brands.
Just as nothing good happens fast in reefing, there are no coincidences in reefing. Beware..

I have had them leak before. I keep them over the sump just in case. I can't seem to find any thing else to replace them with. So until I do, it is the old blue water jug on the job.
