I bought this protein skimmer second hand and I don't know how to set it up. Can someone Please help me. It came with a Rio 1700 attached... but there is another hole on the same tube. Do I have to buy another pump to push the water through? where does the single gray tube go? Does anyone have pics of this skimmer all hooked up? or instruction manuals with pictures? How would I get the good water back to the tank. Sorry, for all the questions but I'm new and trying to do a sump setup.

Thanks,
Mark
Here's the one I have, I think.

Mark,

The Rio pump just recirculated the water in the skimmer and chopps up the air bubbles, that is what makes it work. The other hole in that tube is where the main water supply comes from, some people tee off thier overflow to supply water to the skimmer, but I didn't have much luck with that, so I took a maxijet 1200 powerhead and conected with some 1/2 inch tubing and but a ball valve in the tube. It works great, and the ball valve lets you adjust the flow. Sorry I don't have a picture for you, maybe someone else will post one. I think it's fairly common to do it this way.

Thanks Ryan,
That helps alot!
anyone know where the two out tubes at the top go? should they go into another section in my sump? Anyone with a diagram of where all the inputs and out puts should go in reference to a sump setup?

Thanks for all the patients, I knew you guys/gals would have answers :D

They can output to where ever you want. I have mine outputing into the same chamber as the sump itself. 100% of the supply comes through teh supply hole, so the water around the base of the skimmer doesn't get skimmed again until it either goes back up to the main tank and comes down again or it hits a supply pump.

I have the RIO pump as well. I run ozone thru mine, so the needle wheel only lasts about 18 months.

I use a small rio 90 pump to pump water into the skimmer with some vinyl tubing.

There are two grey valves on the output tubes, I removed them.

I took the two return elbows and run them into a party tumbler that I perforated. I found that this skimmer output has alot of fine bubbles that end up going back into the main tank.

The party tumbler has floss and carbon in it, this absorbs excess ozone, and also gets rid of all the bubbles in the exhaust.

The party tumblers only last about 6 months with the ozone.

Mine is packed into the sump, so getting you a usable photo is impossible.

Thanks everyone for the info.

I think I'm gonna do exactly this:

and now that you guys gave me pump suggestions and where the plumbing goes..... I think I've got what I'm looking for.

Anymore suggestions or ideas are welcomed.

Thanks again,

Mark.
