I am going to get a dosing pump for adding Kalk at night and wondered if the Reef Filler as sold by Champion is a good chice. I have a credit with them so I need to get the pump from them, and looks like reef filler is the best one.

I had a Vario 3, but found the pump gets extrmly hot when ran at a very slow setting.

I have not heard much about the reef filler pump, is it a good choice?

TIA

Don't know about the one's you mentioned, never use them. I use litermeter by spectrapure. I have 2 units in operation, and one is located outdoors which is exposed to outdoor weather. I haven't have any problems with them.

Carl, like Dan I also use the LiterMeter but have heard good things about the Reef Filler also. One thing I did read on the boards a while back is that the Reef Filler is louder than the LiterMeter, but otherwise is a quality product.

I recently purchased the reef filler - it is loud, so you won't want it near your bedroom. It's powerful enough, though, that you can run long tubing & isolate it somewhere where the noise will get muffled - mine's behind the couch...

What was your concern with the hot Vario? I have the same model and really like it. Just curious in case I'm missing a problem.

I was talked into the Vario 3 because they were out of the basic version. I understood that it could somehow dose 3 seperate lines at 3 seperate rates... <duh> It doses three sperate lines at the EXACT same rate. That is why I have the credit, I returned it.

anyhow, I had it turned all the way down and running 24hrs a day for two days. It was too hot to touch the case. I thought the plastic was ready to melt. I wrote a note to J.sprung. He advised against that:

Dear Carl,

Thanks for writing. The Vario3 dosing pump is not intended for continuous operation. The heating is also made worse by
running it at a slower speed! Faster is better for long running times. If you need to run it over the course of a whole day, you
can use an interval timer (the kind used for powerhead wavemakers) to turn it on for about 10 seconds and then off for 10
seconds or more, which would prevent it from heating up too hot. The Vario3 comes with a sophisticated programmable timer
for dosing at intervals as short as 2 seconds, but this timer cannot be used for the 10 on 10 off idea I just described due to the
number of programmed events that would be required.

Sincerely,

Julian Sprung, Vice President

Hello.

I just recently purchased a Vario 3 dosing pump. Yesterday while I was tinkering with it, it ran all day at a very slow setting. I
found the body of the pump was VERY hot to the touch. Is it OK to run this pump at a slow setting for long legnths of time?

Thanks
Carl Shelton

I have had a reef filler for years, it is a very reliable pump, plenty of power, but is noisy.

Carl...

not sure what your budget is, but i'm using the 'Admiral' from Innovative Aquatics (it's $369..ouch). it's basically a hospital-grade medical pump that has been modified somewhat. it has a timer so you can program it to run at night, LED dosage display, and it's almost completely silent. plus there is no heat build-up. i've been very pleased with its performance. here's the link in case you're interested.
