I suppose you could omit a skimmer in a nano or in a large aquarium and some people here do. I think the key lies in the other things done in substitute to having a skimmer for example timely water changes.

a nano that is typically under 10 gallons is so easy to do water changes on that a skimmer seems a waste to me.

i don't know what the definition of nano would be as pertaining to this hobby. depends on what you are comparing it to i suppose.

increased water changes certainly can relieve the need for a skimmer though.

How come nanos dont need skimmers, but big reef tanks with almost no fish needs em?

Because it's easier (and cheaper) to do a 50% waterchange more often in a nano tank than a 75 gal tank (or larger). :)

Qwuintus,
Get a fan for it. A 3" fan from radio shack is a pretty cheap way to go. And you'll want to keep the MH bulb at least 6" or more above the water level. This should keep your heat down unless you keep your house or apt. warmer than 80 degrees. HTH.
