Los Angeles/OC Area- where can I get CO2 tank filled

hi.
Not too familiar with West Covina, but I always go to welding shop for gas.
Just do a finger walk on your Yellow Pages under "welding supply and equipement" and give them a few calls to make sure they can refill it for your at a reasonable cost. 10 lb of gas is about $7.5, $2.5 more than 5 lb. Some smaller welding place only do exchange (empty tank in, different tank with gas out). I don't use the exchange service since my tanks are sparkling clean, while you can get a old tank from them with stamps dated back to the 70's :wink:
Search on warning about not using "food grade" CO2 (brewery, medical) and the lack of evidence for the concern.
Oh, one more thing... try to go to a place as close to your place as possible. I have a few incidents when it explosed in my car, and if I were not lucky, I would be dead by now. Luckily the windows was opened. Sounds like rifle shot, so if it happens, so you can't miss it. 8O

2 things-
My advice on the gas- there is co2 for paintball guns, which has oil in it to keep the gun parts lubed- you DO NOT want this. Get medical grade co2 that is ONLY co2. welding supply shops have both. And get a new canister, so as to make sure there is no oil in it.
Second- to the guy that blew up his car- please explain to the rest of us how/why this happened. Ya know, so we might NOT DIE as well... 8O
I would assume keeping the can upright and in good temp range is important. Any other advice on not blowing up a can o co2??

Seal's in Costa Mesa. They are a Medical supply company and I have used them for over a year.
Its about $10 for 5lb and $15 for 20lb tanks
949-646-2435 and they do it while you are there. Takes 5-10 min tops and they fill the tank you brought in. i bought a used 20lb from them for about a $100 filled and now use my 5lb for back up.

I never use paintball, so I don't know. But if you let me know what is the name of the "oil" in the CO2, so I can look it up for verification. Until there, I will just keep telling people not to worry when they get gas from welding supply.
If you are truely worry (most reefers have some kind of paraoid...IMO :wink: ), just put a inline charcoal filter even if it is certified for medical use. Hey, you never know if they going to put some toxic gas in there so that when you use CO2 to kill cat/dog/mouse, they will died faster :wink:

Basically, I was driving home usng the highway with the canister in the car... then all of a sudden, I head a loud pop sound, and then a hissing sound when all the CO2 comes out in about 10 sec. I have my window rolled down, so the CO2 did not get me, but it scared me bad enough that I almost lost controll of the car (going 80 mph on 55mph zone.. keep in mind that this is LA area, so it is fine :wink: ).
The bottle turned nice and frosty, and there are snow all around it. The problem was due to tripping of the pressure relief valve from excessive pressure. This happened twice, since I have three calcium reactors in three difference places. I got smarter the second time, so it was not as dramatic as the first time.

Go to Airgas in Duarte (maybe Monrovia) its right behind the City of Hope...Its the cheapest place in town. If you have room upgrade to a 10 or 20 pound bottle. It cost almost the same to fill the 10 pounder as it does the 5 pound.
Just to add to the few post above regarding CO2...I work for the largest soda company in the world. We use 50,000 pounds of CO2 a day. The stuff they use for welding is the same stuff they use in soda. Some companys may even send out a cleaner better product to the welding shops because they need the cleanest stff they can get. I don't know anything about the gas used in paintball guns. I'd be willing to bet its all the same.
