I am planning on setting up a 15 or 20g tank, and I was hoping to keep a citron goby. I thought its very small size would make it a good canidate. However, today I was reading an article in reefkeeping magazine about gobies, and it said they need acropora corals to perch on. As my tank will be light by PCs, I have no intention of keeping these. Does the goby really need these corals in the aquarium, or is this just it's natural hangout. Thanks.

I agree. My clown gobies will perch on anything including leather corals. I've noticed that they usually choose a high perch & that if given a choice they will choose something "branchy" like a green sinularia. I'm pretty sure they would even accept a fake branching coral. Rita

Also, keep in mind these will eat the polyps off acroporas. I know you said you don't intent to have them, but they may do the same to other corals as well. I had a pair in my 125 with all SPS and within a matter of 3-4 days tnot one acropora had any polyps left. I couldn't get them out for weeks until the new 360 was set up. It took the corals well over 4-6 weeks to get their polyps back. I discussed this with a friend that had them as well and we both had the same experience. He thought at first that they were pecking at something in the corals and not the polyps, but I witnessed it first hand. Once they do pair, they will spawn like clock work every 10 days or so. I really liked the color, which is why I got them in the first place, but you couldn't pay me enough to get any of these suckers ever again. :x

No, this is not true. I have one for a year before I was able to get a second one. These clown gobies change sex as needed. Any two will for a pair.
My clown gobies did not bother my SPS other than clean a site on the coral to lay eggs. They spawned every 10 days or so. IME, they are great for reef tanks.

Mihn, I saw that you had one for a year before you got the other. I was looking over some old posts at RC, and a couple of people said they put 2 in together and they fought to the death. I'm not sure of the size of their tanks, could this have something to do with it? Or maybe that they went in together? I was considering keeping a pair but am having second thoughts. Can anybody give me some advice on pairing them? Thanks.

I know that these gobies change sex as needed so any two will form a pair. If you add two small ones they will be fine. I have two in my tank but I know of several reefer have multiple in their tank.
Breeding pair will clear a small patch in the center of an SPS colony to make a nest. They will use the same nesting site time after time so the damage to a healthy SPS colony is minimal. I guess a stressed colony can RTN or die from the center because of this activity.
I wanted to add more of this boby family into my tank, but there is only one LFS here in Corpus. I can't seem to get them to order these goby because they are delicate. Being small, they don't handle stress too well since they don't have much reserve. I would buy any of these goby that I see.
Read the article by Henry C. Schultz III. It give great information about these gobies. I think they are great reef fish.
There is some report that some of these goby eats coral polyps. I did not have this problem with my goby. According to Henry, we can tell the different by observing the jaw structure of these fishes.

My experience with clown gobies makes me want to warn you against putting 2 in a 15 or 20g. I love these little guys & always want to buy them when I see them but that is so seldom. I once put 2 black ones in a 20 & one bullied the other & attacked it everytime it came out into the open. The bullied one died. I didn't realize the bullied one was so bad off or I would have removed it...just knew I didn't see it much. These fish were also very starved when I bought them so that could have contributed to the death also.

One time I bought 2 yellow gobies & one died in the bucket while I was acclimatizing them so I agree, they are easily stressed out.

Another time I had 2 green clown gobies & the remaining 1 yellow goby & remaining 1 black goby in a 45 gal. I noticed that the yellow goby had bites out of his dorsal & I noticed that there were "confrontations" between the gobies so I removed all 3 other ones to a 75 & left the yellow in the 45. His dorsal healed up fine & he is fine now.

I'm just trying to say that they are territorial & from my past experience I would not recommend more than 1 for a 15/20H gal, although maybe a 20L would work. Rita
