BB,

Check with your local health food store, or buy the garlic cloves and extract it yourself.

Most health food stores, especially places like GNC carry the waterbased garlic (brand name is "Kyolic"). However it's no cheaper than Kent's Garlic Xtreme and IMO the Kent product works a bit better.

bb,

I never actually did it myself, but I do know you use the cloves. Probably there is more than one way to do it. I think you could use a pair of pliers and squeese it out that way. The stuff does stink so if you can find the Kent brand that Matt recommended it might not be a bad way to go.

I hate parasites. IMO they kill more marine fish than anything else. Good luck with the garlic.

I use the Kyolic and just thaw the frozen brine shrimp blocks in it and let it soak. Seems to work ok for me.

Garlic extract is carried by, surprise, Garlic.

Simply squeeze garlic through a garlic press and you'll have guaranteed fresh and inexpensive garlic extract.
Freshness seems to be important for efficacy of garlic, so your own may be better than the store bought.

Beer here is what you do.
Take a lid and add some dry food flake or shrimp (dried because it absorbs more garlic extract) and squeeze drops of the extract on the dry food until it looks soaked. Let stand for 20 minutes so it really soaks in.
Swish the lid with the soaked food in your tanks current.
Feed very often and feed only garlic soaked foods. The idea here is to get as much garlic in the fish as possible.
Feed for 30 days even if the ich disappears from the fish as this is the life cycle of ich.
I do the garlic regimen every time I add a fish as an ich preventative and have not had ich since.
IMO this treatment should be used on ich prone fish like tangs whether ich is apparent on the fish or not.

One great thing about the Internet is that you can simply ask a question and have a bunch of people spend their time to give you useful advice for free, which you cheerfully accept and then announce that you did just the opposite, yet no one will call you a duckhead because this is a family forum.

ahh how friendly and refreshing you are .

well leo thanks for the duckhead remarks . i think you should first realize where someones coming from before you first get all pissy that i didnt follow your particular directions to a t. i appreciate peoples imput very much and usually do the best to follow it. however, i realized that i dont have time to make my own, as i am taking finals shortly and, unless you say so, i think i should act now. also my kole tank doesnt really like flake food so i thought it may be a good idea to add it to the food he eats. this is all besides for the fact that sometimes, Leo, there is more than one way to do things.

thankyou everyone else for the replies, i found them very helpfull, and i hope you dont feel i have wasted your time, or that i am a duckhead .

naesco- thanks i will try the flake food out, i have heard the tangs are attracted to the garlic itself, so he may go for it. how much less would it work on something like formula one?

Thanks
duckhead

I have never used formula one. Again the idea here is to use food that will absorb as much garlic extract as possible. Nori would be another dry food which tangs love

I have tried using garlic cloves but it is a stinky messy job when you have to feed three or four times a day for 30 days. The bottled garlic extract makes more sense to me. I agree that it is probably more potent if the extract comes out of a fresh garlic clove though.

But, ich is always first detected just after the LFS and health food stores close :) so it is a good idea to start with garlic extract from fresh garlic cloves until you have the time to track down some garlic extract.

Best idea: keep a bottle of extract in your fridge just in case you need it.

I'm not an expert, but I believe I read something once that in order to reap the benifits of using garlic to help with ich that you have to squeeze the cloves yourself. Something about a chemical in the garlic that only lasts for a short while after being squeezed. Therefore, using store bought garlic extract would be useless because it lack the chemical that you are needing. Again, I'm no expert, but I'm sure I read this somewhere. If someone else know better, than feel free to put me in my place. :)

I think the comment was that the chemical in the garlic that acts as a anti fungal, antibiotic and anti parasite agent is stronger in the clove. But you have to remember that the extract is not just garlic juice; it is concentrated.
Let me assure you the extract works very well.

Thank you for clearing this up for me. Like I said, I'm no expert. I've been in the reefkeeping hobby for just over 2 months (had FW for years) and I'm learning something new everday.

Ilsimen- welcome to the board, lots of great stuff here.

it seems like the tang is already clearing up well (no more spots). but i will continue the treatment till mid January. i tried just flakes, and the tang didnt seem interested. i will keep trying. where can i get nori. im guessing i should try an organic grocery store.
