I am planning on using vinyl tubing, for the flexiblility, ease of installation, and to minimize the angled restrictions. Any good reasons why I should stay away from the vinyl??

I also see a lot of people using what looks like the ball socket joint tubing, and some using plain ol PVC as return nozzles. Any pros and cons for these??

Does the ball & socket tubing connect to vinyl easily??

I've got a Iwaki MD30RLXT @ about 4 1/2 feet.

I was thinking of splitting the return into the 55, have one in each back corner.

Avoid vinyl at all costs. Two big problems. First, it kinks easily, restricting flow. Second, it's clear and thus fosters algae growth inside the tubing.

I highly recommend flexible PVC. It suffers from neither of those problems, but it does not result in any 90 degree turns like hard PVC. It is easily plumbed with regular PVC primer and cement.

Flex PVC is available online at many places. I got mine at savko.com.
