I have a Mag 9 that I have been using to mix saltwater, and it puts current into the trash can I mix water in. I would now like to use a Mag 9 for a closed loop and am wondering 2 things:

1) Will the goofy Mag 9 I have still put a charge into the water if it is used as an external pump?

2) Can it be fixed, or should I just get a new one?

TIA

There is a 3 year warranty with pumps dealing with main motor problems and not parts (1 year). I guess if you have your receipt or somehow a credit card receipt of your purchase, they Mag Mfg will fix it.

THe cost might be to deliver them the pump for inspection.

Righty:

I think it's possible that you're getting stray voltages from inductive currents (because the motor casing is in direct contact with the water column).

You could put an input/output hose on the pump and run it sitting on the floor next to the trash can. Check for stray voltages in the water in this configuration (ie. running as a closed loop).

It's possible that you could eliminate the stray voltages once the motor housing is not in direct contact with the water (since it's a magnetic drive pump, the motor should be isolated even with water flowing through the volute).

hi.
Ditto what Wolfman said. I have a few Maxijet that will give you a pretty good shock if you put hand in the tank. The coil in both Maxijet and Mag pump is potted, and this is where the trouble come from 90% of the time if it got overheated for extended amount of time.

Thanks guys!

I did the test and as a closed loop the thing trips the GFCI. Time to buy a new pump.

So, after I left the house this morning I realized that the pump was still wet when I tested it. After I got home I tested it again and no stray current. Yay!
