Sorry about the MI :( . Seeing as how I noticed the lighted snowman right away, maybe you should pull it back out of the attic and bring some cheer back to the tank! LOL! :D

You should have posted a picture of this. Some folks get-off on that type of thing.

Sorry about the missing and dead MI's. And for posting it!

I am very sorry to hear of the early demise of your Moorish Idol.
Please do not replace them. Your tank looks great as it is.

Did any of you see the photos of the moorish idols eating the New Life pellets in lastest Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine. The photos are from Pablo Tepoot, but the article is by the editor.

Sorry to hear about the loses Garry. The longer we stay in the hobby, the more we realize we didn't know as much as we thought we did.

Garry,
How global is this thing? I,m here in Aus and did my early reading in Practical Fishkeeping. One hell of a magazine. I'm pretty new to this hobby find that out here it is really difficult to get latest and greatest gear(not that it is really necessary at a basic level) yet we have such an awesome array of livestock from pacific/indo. Any other internationals out there? Garry congrats on the big reef and knowing heaps.
:D
cheers
TC

Garry - you have a truely beautiful tank. I think Dr. Reef was a bit harsh. His location 'monkey on your back' says it all.

I'm new to this forum but not fish keeping. 24yrs ago I kept a moorish idol for 3 yrs till I had to break down the tank (125 gal). All my fish (yes all) including the MI and Reagl Angel ate like pigs. I kept the fish head count low and made my own food. We have a very good fish market nearby. I'd buy a collection of what was fresh (scallops, squid, shrimp, clams, flounder), put it in a blender. Then I'd take the mixture and paint it onto clam shells and small brain coral skeletons; freeze and use as needed. I also used lettuce on a clip for fish so inclined.

seamaiden -thanks for the welcome

420puff - looking at the post dates I guess your comment was directed towards me. Sorry if you thought I was out of turn. I read most of the thread and found Dr. Reef to be a bit out of turn. Then when Garry's tank was finally shown he said it was OK. In MHO the tank was OUTSTANDING. If my defense of Garry was wrong I'm sorry.

I agree with the comment that if you don't try new things you won't progress. Of course new comers shouldn't try to keep delicate fish. I believe that any store owner worth his salt won't consider selling a Moorish Idol to a beginner. Long term he'll make a lot more money by guiding a newbie in the right direction. Most stores I've been to clearly point out the pros and cons of fish (size, temperament, preferences). Yes he will sell it if the newbie insists but hey it's a business.

Are you sure it was a Morish Idol.
Banner Fish, (Heniochus Acuminatus) look just like them, do wonderful in captivity, and eat pellet food.
Just wondering

I would agree. Can you please confirm that they are not Heniochus. The pallet food in question must be Spectrum. Original one had a flame angel on it but I heard they came out with a new one recently that is specially design for specialist eaters. Not sure though.

How many people say keeping a Morrish Idol is very difficult. I disagree i've had one for 1month now eating like a pig in a 55g tank. My tank has been setup for only 3months and the morrish idol was my first fish added. I've been in this hobby for about 6yrs now. i love this fish. I have videos, pics what ever u all like to see for proof.. :D

What Greg said. It's not difficult at all to get Moorish Idols eating. Common misconcption. Many will eat like pigs right away. It's getting them past 1-1.5 years in captivity which seems particularly difficult. Seems like a long term nutrition issue.

HA....

I started reading this thread from page 1 and was getting ready to comment when I realized about 3 pages in that it was all from 2002/2003

Isn't a 55 gallon much to small for an Idol???? Just asking, not trying to start a problem..
