I'm looking into setting up a very small tank to hold one, maybe 2 little fish. There are plenty whose looks I find appealing, and am having trouble deciding. I'd love to hear about which fish you have the most fun watching, and any interesting behaviors or quirks they have. Thanks.

The Mexican sailfin blenny ( Emblemaria hypacanthus) is the coolest little fish I know of. The male has a large dorsal fin it throws up when distressed. The females are cool too. Reaches about 5cm.

One or 2 neon gobies plus MAYBE a yellow clown goby. How small is the tank? These fish are so small that you could probably have 3 in a 10 gallon. Rita

Sunrise Dottyback

or

Swissguard Basslet

or

6-line Wrasse.

All are small and have cool behavior.

Thanks for the replys. rlp, the tank would probaby be a be a 15 gallon. Right now one possibility is the citron goby, which I have read likes meat. I'm also interested in having a cleaner or fire shrimp in the tank, would this be a problem? And I've heard that you don't see the fire shrimp nearly as much as a cleaner. Is this true? Thanks, TuffGong.

This is a picture of the male sailfin at about 1.25". I have a pair that live very comfortably in a 3.5 gallon tank.

dizzy, is the mexican sailfin resonably priced, and can you sex them easily? and wombat, how tough is it to pair off the shrimp? Would 2 be to many for a 15? Thanks.

Tuff,

It is extremely easy to sex the Mexican sailfin blenny as the male has the large dorasl fin. The female is attractive although not as flamboyant as the little stud. You should be able to find a nice pair for around $40.00. They like holes in rocks or small bottles. It is defintely one of the coolest fish I have ever owned in my 18 years in the hobby. It has been reported that they are easy to breed in captivity as well.

Yours is awfully cute & fat. What do they eat?? Algae? Plankton? Flakefood??? I would definitely be interested in getting a pair if I ever see them. Rita

Rita,

That is another great thing about the Mexican sailfins, they eat practically anything. They will eat small marine pellets (New Life), chopped shrimp, live adult brine, or combination of stuff like Marine Supreme(shrill, clam, krill etc.) If they have a drawback it would be a relatively short lifespawn like other tiny fish. They might only live naturally for a year or two. Still they are a great fish and I that doubt that anyone who ever has a pair will ever forget them.

Tuffgong, Lysmata amboinensis the skunk cleaner shrimp is hermaphroditic so you can just put any two together and they'll start breeding if well fed. As far as I know all Lysmata species (fire, peppermint shrimp) are hermaphroditic. The peppermint shrimp has easy to rear larvae, if you're interested in doing that.
