Okay guys ... I am thinking about removing this large Montipora Capricornus from my tank in the near future. I am trying to get an idea of what it is worth to either sell to someone locally or to get some store credit :D

It is a morph of two varieties, the back part being a branching and plating type while the front part being solely a plating type. The coloration is a light olive green with tan edges. As you can see by the ruler, overall it is about 9" wide, about 9" front to back, and probably goes down into the water about 5" or so. It is all on one rock ... approximately 6 lb piece of live rock. Believe it or not, this piece grew from two 1" frags of coral :p

So if I were to have this sold or traded, what do you think it would be able to get $$$ wise?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a picture that was taken two months ago. the right part of the coral has been trimmed a bit since then recently.

$50 to $75 IMHO.

You could frag it and make more, but someone with a large tank would likely pay $100- $150 for a fine piece like that (at the LFS.) You'll likely will get a 50% store credit or 33% in cash of what they they think they can sell it for. That's the going rate around here.

The $50-$75 range was actually the range I was thinking about too. My original thought though was $5/lb just for the rock piece which alone at a store would be about $30 ... So another $50 on top of that for the massive coral colony ... those were my thoughts.

Thanks for the input.

To bad it wasn't a blue, orange or yellow monti you can get a bit more for it. I think yours has some decent valve based on size along not looking at color. $75 would be a good starting value, but I wouldn't expect much more than $50 or so from a LFS.

I've grown out a few yellow monti's to large for a 5 gallon bucket. I traded them in for drygoods not cash. I've been about to get close to $120 in dry goods per colony.

You could make more with frags as long as you can stay clear of shipping them (Just not worth the hastles)
