Why doesn't reefs.org have a line under the user name that tells people how long that person has been a saltwater hobbyist. To me that information would be much more interesting than how many posts the person has made.

Some of us aren't that good at math. And the rest of us would lie. :D

I agree.........thats a good iidea. I have been in S/W for a year. I researched for the first six months and collected my equipment..then I set up, I now have a 29 gallon Fish/invert tank that has been up for six months with almost no problems so far. I was in F/W for 30 years...45 year if you count a goldfish and guppies.LOL

I'll use 8 fingers, 2 thumbs, 5 toes, and 1 um you-know.

I'm just starting to hit the second set of toes now.

Started with fish only, eventualy got the perfect reef.
(I only wish it was bigger)

You can always put it in your signature... ;)

Seriously tho, post this in the Feedback forum and either Chucker or Microchip will get with you about whether or not this is an option w/ phpBB. We're upgrading our server in a matter of a month or so and if this is an option you'd like to see on the board software, please make them aware of it.

liquid,

I'll post something in the feedback section. I've personally been a saltwater hobbyist and lfs owner for nearly 18-years and I'm still learning stuff all the time. I realize some people can learn more in one year than others learn in 5, but I think experience is the best teacher. The longer I'm involved with the hobby the more I respect and appreciate the wonder of the marinelife we keep.

PS
There is no need for anyone to lie about how long they have been in the hobby. Having many years of experience doesn't necessarily make you a better aquarist than a relative newbie that is well read. It does show that you still enjoy the hobby, and have a zest for learning about it, long after the new wears off.

I had a couple of FW tanks when I was a kid.

I started my Reef 2 years and 4 months ago after having spent a few month reading and planning it.

Now I'm still reading and planning my next tank! I guess that is the story of your life as a "reefer".

I wonder if the "next tank" planning ever stops?

I have several plans........my next tank will be a Fish Only....probably DwarfLions.........and an Eel. I don't want all the work and expense it takes to keep the Corals and I like to handfeed my Waterbuddies.

hi.
According to my mother, I used to keep a tropical fish in a jag when I was about three years old. The fish is similar to Betta sp., common in the area I used to live (SE Asia).

and, what about those of us who may have started out as hobbyists, then had to get a job in the trade to pay for our ever-expanding interests? once you get there it's not exactly a hobby anymore, is it?

I know what you are puttin down Seamaiden. I loved Wrestling,Boxing, and the Martial Arts. Then I had to use these skills on the job. Now I avoid conflicts outside of work when ever possible. I have even been known to take a beating rather than fight. I hate it! I am not trying to be funny. I am serious. :( I will never work in a LFS..for fear of loosing interest in Marine Aquaria.
