I run a calc reactor on my 75 SPS but wanted to boost my calc levels a little. This stuff really does work but I feel like I am playing with fire. Even the label says "For advanced aquarists only". So basically I just want to learn more about it. Must be some type of very potent calcium salt? I heard it should not be used every day? So tell me what you know!

I've just done some research into this as I've used it to boost my calcium levels recently.

It's apparently anhydrous calcium chloride.

It's useful to quickly boost calcium levels without effecting alkalinity, though if you add too much, it will percipitate calcium carbonate from the water and decrease alk.

It's problematic for long term use because:
1) It doesn't boost alkalinity along with the calcium levels like other methods.
2) It leaves a lot of Cl- floating around which bond with the Na+ in the water and increase the salinity with long term heavy use. This is not a problem for an occasional use or with frequent water changes.

The package directions indicate an addition regimen that is perhaps somewhat conservative. If you want to know how much to add, see:

http://www.kademani.com/reefchem.htm for a nice calculator.

Be careful - the stuff is pretty caustic and gives off a lot of heat when you combine it with water.

As I said in the other thread.

What are your magnesium levels?

If its low (below 1400). It'll be thou to impossible to get it to go up.

Check your mag levels.

Before I tested...Turbo Calcium wouldn't help me even.
