Guys - I am living in Japan now and this is the only setup I could come up with. I think this is why we get the better quality/rare fish and coral selections...
You wish you had the equipment and setup in the pictures you posted. Keep DREAMING buddy.
Hikari...please show us your real setup...I imagine it looks a lot like a goldfish bowl with a Rio powerhead. 8O
The pictures you posted has been circulating on these boards for the longest time, so don't pretend it's your tank. You can prove me wrong by taking a picture with you standing next to the setup and showing me your other pictures not circulated on the web.
Ok, let's go away from this clown, and talk about real things.
Japanese do have better selection and rarer corals because they are willing to pay the premium and they are much closer to the collection region in Southeast Asia. That's it! We share similar filtration methods. However, they seem to keep their calcium levels much lower and their lighting is much more selective and numerous. They select different color lights for different coral's pigment and the depth of the collected region. Also, they like to zone their SPS and hard corals. It is just amazing to see some of those tanks. I think they are doing a wonderful job in reefkeeping, and I wish I can learn more about their techniques. But it is ridiculous to post pictures of other people's tank and brag about it...quite pathetic really...

Sorry I didn't 'really' mean to claim this setup for my own. I was kinda being sarcastic. I do wish I had it.
Anyhow...point to be made was what Jimbo was referring to...that it would appear that since the Japanese were more willing to front the cost of the equipment that they would be able to maintain the more difficult of sealife. That being said there are plenty of you on this board that have ultra complicated and well designed systems too.
Truly though, I'd love to see more pics of our advanced reef keepers systems that appear as well organized as that of the pic posted.
Well one thing that is poor design "on the pipes" is the use of right angles. The use of sharp angles will drasticly increase head pressure on high flow pumps.
PS It does look cool and now that I am going sumpless I want to find the fittins for the probes that they used! It is obvious that no expense was spared.
running a high tech , multi gadget, tank, does not gaurantee a healthy thriving reef system? if you have not got the knpwledge in the first place how do you expect to be successfull! A BIG BANK BALANCE is then no good at all, i have an all bells and whistles tank! but as i'v said , the technology is no good with a monkey running it? But i 'v not got the bank balance..GT s. wales
Arguably, that is one impressive system!
But unless you're only out to impress, it doesn't matter how cool your setup looks or how many gadgets you have. Look at mother nature's setup.

Many acropora species show this growth pattern- it is called tabulate or more commonly table coral. They are not much more difficult to keep but are usually collected in shallow waters (Borneman, p. 45 Aquarium Corals- Selection, Husbandry and Natural History) and therefore typically require more light than other species. They also need tremendous water motion to keep detritus from settling on top of the "table."
