I would like to purchase a circulation pump for the new sump design, and I cannot find a solid choice.

The Iwaki's are great pumps, too loud.....
Velocity makes an excellent pump as well, too much heat......
Dolphin sounds nice, little too much flow for a 55......

Any others??

Guess I am really worried about the heat, as I am trying to avoid buying a chiller. Living in NW Wisconsin, I can't justify this equipment for my tank, not having air conditioning in my home. I can deal with a little noise (this tank is not in a bedroom) but I don't want something I have to talk over.

Which way should I go??

Quiet One's are great pumps. Although I have noticed a slight temperature increase since I installed two of them on my 75.

You are always going to get some heat with a submersible pump. That being said, Mag drives are a nice option. Anything up to the 1800 is very quiet, and even 1800+ may be quiet if you don't have 15 feet of head pressure on it.

I have a Quiet one on my 55 tall. It is pretty quiet. I do have a chiller though, which I am very happy to have! :D Before I got my calcium reactor, I didn't need the chiller, but I think the power head heated up the water just enough to tip the scales on the hottest days.

Is the ampmaster adjustable? I have heard that they are really good for heat.

How much flow are you looking for? If this is for a 55, I can't imagine that an Iwaki is too loud. I have two Iwaki MD30RLTs, and they are practically silent. I also have an AMP3000 and it is also quiet, but not as quiet as the Iwakis.

I have both a quiet one and iwaki 55rlt in my system. The quiet 1 is MUCH quieter than the iwaki but (i) runs much hotter and (ii) is much less reliable - (I've replaced quiet ones about annually). I like the Iwaki, but it is loud - loud enough for me to consider retrofitting my sump to another room - but not so loud as to require that retrofit. The quiet one runs my filtration modules, the iwaki my skimmer, and I use a Mag 9.5 submersible to run my return (that is pretty darn quiet, by the way and its been running for 3 years with no problems).

Desktop, Iwaki's made in Japan have "MD" in front of the model number, american made ones have "WMD." The japanese made models are more expensive and reputed to be the better pumps. I have an american WMD30RLXT that has run 24/7 for about two years without the slightest problem. If the japanese one's are slightly quieter than I would spend the extra next time around. Not that mine is overly noisy, but I strive for the most QUIET system possible.

How about a Little giant??
I´ve had one for about 2 years and not a single trouble, not even when a snail went into the impeller
I´m looking forward for an ampmaster 3k, but it won´t be in the short term, and believe me, I have done my homework looking for a nice and reliable pump

Thanks for the chatter!!

I just purchased the Japanese Iwaki MD30RLXT.

I've got the design down for the sump, now I just need to select materials, and build / buy a container.
