I think I have made a decision, and will probably buy a digital camera this week :D :D :D . I was wondering if anyone out there has an opinion on this exact model. I am looking at the Sony DSC-S85. It is a 4MP Digital Camera. If anyone has used it or the Sony DSC-S75, please let me know your honest opinion on it. I have a sony Mini-DV Camera, and I love it. I already have a 128MB memory stick, that I can use with the DSC-S85. I will put the 16MB memory stick, that comes with the DSC-S85, in the video camera.

Thanks in advance for sharing your opinions.

The DSC-S85 is a good "prosumer" level camera, with a sharp lense. However, Sony's cameras all have a habit of distorting/altering natural colors [they tend to raise the color intensity to surreal levels sometimes], which some people like, and others dislike.

Especially if you have already gone the memory stick route, the S85 wouldn't be a bad choice. I'd recommend reading the _very_ detailed reviews of the S85, as well as the at least 2 other cameras in it's class- the Canon G2 and the Nikon Coolpix 5000 at dpreview.com. If you want more detailed advice, you can use the forums at dpreview.com as well.

Personally, I have a Canon G2 with an IBM microdrive, and the combo is great!

Hope this helps...

Going with either a Sony,Canon or Nikon will get you a top quality camera. That Sony is a good piece. I myself use a canon G1 still(with an external flash, tiffen zoom and macro lens add ons). Its 3mp, but I have found that I have yet to blow up a picture past 10x12, so I will be keeping it until something truly amazing comes out for a grand or less that will markedly supplant its capabilites.

I have the sony f505v. I love it. My buddy came over the other night with a 707. I love that one too. If there were more differences between the two cameras I'd probably sell this one and buy that one. But, I know in another year there will be a newer version of the cam and I think I'll get that one.

Hope that makes your decision even harder

Sony digital cams are high priced and overrated. There are so many digital cameras to choose from where you can spend less and still get a qulality camera.

Most cams have lenses made by nikon or canon and some have sensors made by Sony.

You can check out dpreview.com to learn about and compair cameras.

If $ is a concern, start watching Circuit City and Walmart. Circuit City usually puts a good price on them before discontinuing them. Walmart usually has a great price on cams before they are disco'd.

And lastly, target gives a 90 day satisfaction guarrantee. If you don't like it and don't damage it you can take it back after 90 days. I actually started with Target and found the same one for $100 less. They took it back, and didn't care that I lived in PA but found it cheaper online from Computers4Sure in NH.

I also have a Nikon Coolpix, and as far as Macro Capability is concerned, this camera is it. Color rendition is awesome, and with Nikon's recent price drop, very affordable too.

If anyone would like some sample images, just email me. I'll be happy to send/post some images.

Has anyone tried the Olympus 4040? I've been thinking about this camera because I have an Olympus phototube on my microscope, and it would be the cheapest way to go. Could alway change out the tube if the Coolpix is far superior.

The G1 is actually the best camera for macros, that is, once you get 3 accesories for it. 1. and external flash for its hotshoe,2 the Tiffen lense adaptor, and 3. Tiffens macro lense, which makes the Nikon cameras look cheap in comparison. I have had my G1 since the first week it came out works awesome.

Actually, the Nikon is NOT cheap. Secondly, you don't need ANY accessories to utilize it's awesome macro capabilities.

I enjoy the Canon line of imaging equipment and have many of their products. For the money I spent on the Coolpix 995 (Less than $500) made it a very attractive purchase, despite the excellent reviews the Coolpix has received.
