Rio powerheads

Are the new Rio powerheads any better then the old design :?:

I hate my rios, big time!!!! I wish that I had just gotten maxi-jets like I have always used for my new tank. There noisy, I mean really noisy they hum so loud you can here them in other rooms. I had them on a wavemaker but whenever they came on they made a loud rattling sound for about 5 seconds like the impellers were to small for the shaft and they were bouncing around inside. My lawnmower blenny would get to close to them sometimes and then they would come on and he would get this look like, 8O 8O :evil:

My advise is buy maxi-jets.

At least they would turn back on. If the power kicked off for a few minutes, my Rio wouldn't come back on with the power.

My Main is a Rio 3100, and it's been good to me. (knocks on wood). I'm actually thinking of replacing it soon, been running for about a year, and I have heard of horror stories about them. My reef depend solely on it for circulation, so I figured I'd replace it as a precaution before anything happens...

thanks for the replys but I need something more then a maxi jet 1200 it only has a 295 gph rating and the new rio power heads are said to be made better, with a titanium shaft what is safe to place on a remora c skimmer above 295 gph :?:

Oh yeah, I forgot to ad that my one of my rios that has beewn in use for 4 months just kicked the bucket.

If you are looking for a big pump I would recomend a pondmaster mag-drive pump from supreme. They are a good quallity pump IMO, and have been very reliable for me.

I've just bought a couple of these recently. They seem to be a well made pump, but they do get hot. I felt the Mag 5 and 7 on a friend's tank. They were mounted external and were hotter than I expected. They are higher wattage than the Rios for the same amount of pumping performance. They do have the ground prong on the plug. Do the new Rios have this?

I've had more maxi jets crap out on me than rios. And I have far more rios in use than mj's.

i read online some review that said rios are the best when they're used in a way that they're on all the time. if you use them with wave-makers and they are stopping and starting all the time, then they're not good for that purpose. it said that rios have one moving part and they dont wear out (again if theyre not used in a wavemaker setup).

8 months ago, I removed and threw away all my RIO's. After 2 shorted and burned, that was it!. BTW, I have 2 Maxijets that are running perfectly after 8 years- 1000's. I dont think they make thst version anymore.
