I have noticed my temp is much hotter this year after adding another MH to my hood. It is now from 82-84. Am I pushing it? Everything looks like it is still happy and growing.

Carl,
82-84 is where you need to be. Your corals will grow best in that range.

Do a search on temp, it has been discussed many times over on the recommended temperature ranges for our reefs.

Regards, Marco :)

Thanks. yeah, I know it is OK. I was just wondering who has the warmest tank. How high can you go. 84-86? 86-88? I don't think I feel like I would want to go much higher than I am now. I think many people still think you have to have lower temps like 78-80 , although I am comfortable with it as high as 84

My tank usually runs 80-82 in winter, but 84-88 in summer. I once reached 92 when a fan was inadvertantly unplugged. The next few days, my pom-pom xenia were hurting, but the bastards pulled through (damn.. I thought I had a solution to their rapid colonization of my tank).

Mine is 27 - 28 celcius.
(84 or 85 farenheight, give or take)

I think that a CONSTANT temperature is a little more important than WHAT temperature.

I'd like to keep my tanks at 80 to 82, but in the summer months (and so far this spring I've been having daily swings of 83-86 with peaks of 88 and hit 89 on one day (killed ligths, floated ice, cranked AC).

I take notice at 85, keep close eye at 86 anything over 86 I take actions to reduce temp (mainly kill the halides and crank the AC).

I use a dual probe digital thermometer.

Have yet to have any side effects from high temps <knock, knock> except a cyano bloom.

Who is the Hottest one here?

lol - for a minute there, i thought you were talking about me.

my temp is pretty consistent at 80-82 degrees. but during the summer (like now), it's been climbing as high as 86. my frogspawn seems to open the largest in the warmer temp, i've noticed. but i'm having a terrible algae outbreak that i normally wouldn't have. it's horrible. :(

My temp is always about 77-79... I always thought it was better to be in this range.... I stayed away from MH lighting not to increase the temp too much.... Hmmm might have to reconsider...

I run 77-79 and have for years with MH and a chiller with no issues - again there is no BEST temperature so long as its stable and you are comfortable with hazards/benefits that go along with the temperature of choice

This is a hotly debated subject. Many people find that coral growth (SPS specifically) increases when tank temps are raised from upper 70's to mid to lower 80's.

Mine runs at 80 constantaly. I keep the house at 77 pretty much year round. My tank used to run 77-79 but I changed to an external pump and the temp went to 80 and doesn't seem to fluctuate at all. When I had a submersable pump, the temp fluctuated between 77 and 79.

Everything seemed perfectly happy at either temp!

Yikes!

When my tank goes above 80, I usually start to get worried! I try to keep it from 75-78, as I thought anything higher would have ill effects on my poor little fishies.

Looks like I need to go MH shopping , if I need not fear hitting 80+. Heh heh heh...

I agree!

If your are interested in the temperature range of the ocean's reefs, please refer to this post:

You will find that corals kept at the higher temps, (82-84) will tolerate temp spikes much better than if kept at the lower ranges of 76-78.

Another good reason to run your reef at the higher temps IMO.

I run 79.5-82 during the winter and 81-84 during the summer. Sometimes I get a bit of a swing when trying to dial in the lights/fans/and air conditioner the first few hot days of summer and the coll period beginning winter. Once I get it worked out it stays pretty consistant in the ranges above. Last year I lost two sps frags during the dialing in period for summer heat when I had a heat spike, I attributed this more to the swing in temp rather than to how hot it actually got as others keep there tanks in the 86-87 range in summer heat. Mine just jumped from 81 to 87 in one day and did in the frags.

81-82 in winter and 82-84 in summer. With the occasional spike up to 86-87.
