My LFS guy had a breeding pair of black true perculas and one of them over night jumped out of the tank and died! Doesnt that suck bigtime, he was asking 5000 for the pair. Atleast they had some babies before it jumped. :(

Is that number right??? My friend has a pair of pure black perculas. He's definitely not rich enough to afford that price.

no, thats what he has them for sale for. Each baby that it produces he can sell for 125 dollars. So obviously to have a breeding pair could definetly pay off in the end. Especially since they reproduce every 3 weeks and can have many babies at a time. He wasnt kidding when he said he would sell them for 5 k. Its not bad if you can imagine how much you can make off of their babies!

ok, a friend of mine has a pair of black perculas that spawn every once in a while and he paid nowhere NEAR that price.

i'm gonna go out on a limb here. I once saw a "black percula" that had no stripes and hence was completely black. Guy wanted 350 for it. is this the case here??

Hell, i'd by a few dozen pairs at that price, i could make a killing!

The wild ones don't do so hot, so i suppose captive raised ones would be worth some cash, but there's no clownfish that's worh over a hundred bucks!

I think if i valued a pair of fish at $5,000 i would probably take the initiative to get a top on the tank and plug up any holes. Otherwise that's like putting up the mona lisa with thumbtacks, no?

I also think that amount might be, um, slightly inflated. Mako won the grand prize at the last MACNA - a 125 gallon tank, very nice cherry wood stand, sump, skimmer, ecosystem refugium, nice pc lighting system, 100 lbs or so of live rock, live sand, multiple corals, several clams (some nice black ones), and about 2 dozen ORA fish, including various dottybacks and two black percs....and the whole thing was valued at $4000.

So $5,000 for a breeding pair - I doubt it.

You can't base a pair's worth on the cost of its potential offspring!! Most pairs are sold for 10, maybe 20 dollars more than the two individually unless you're getting ripped off. A LFS here was selling very very young ocellaris clowns as a pair--they just put two in the same tank-- for $90!! Sucks to be a CUSTOMER at that LFS. I don't feel sorry for the LFS though.
